I went to drive my 2006 Prius and after it being turned on for about 5-10 seconds, it started making a very loud sound from the engine. I immediately turned it off and tried turning it back on a bunch of time but the noise did not go away.

    For some more information:
    • It is at 150,000ish miles and there are no check engine lights coming on.
    • It got an oil change and maintenance check 2 weeks ago.
    • I drove it 4 days ago and everything was fine.
    • It has been fairly warm but it got down to the low 40s last night and it is raining today.
    • I looked under the car and it does not appear to be missing the catalytic converter.
I have not idea what to do? Should I leave it running and or will my engine be damaged?

    Please Help!

    Welcome to PriusChat!!
Does it sounds like a tank, or can you describe the "very loud noise" you hear coming from the engine area?

previously, did you start it, and then shut it down before it finished warming up?

Double check the cat is not missing? Second gens are VERY popular targets.

When I was a kid, my mom started the Jeep and Rat tat tat tat so she quickly shut it off. Secons later a kitten ran out from under the car with a bit of a head wound. The jeep was fine but the cat never was quite right after that.

This was before cars even had cats.

That happened to me once (in a former vehicle with multiple fan/alternator/steering/AC belts), and I had to scoop up what was left of the cat and have it put down. The day that happened was not one of my favorites.
