    . . .
The next place to look is the insurance exchanges set up under the Affordable Care Act. Losing health insurance that you got through your job is considered a "qualifying event" to enroll in a plan on all the health insurance exchanges. That means you can go to Healthcare.gov or your state-run exchange and shop for a new plan. The Kaiser Family Foundation has a handy subsidy calculator so you can see what you might pay in premiums for these plans — remember that your unemployment benefits count as income.
    . . .

There is also COBRA. Changing jobs from GE to Boeing, my wife had a pre-existing condition (narcolepsy) so I carried COBRA as a bridge. Two months after changing jobs, my wife suffered a ruptured spinal disc. So we had both Boeing and COBRA and actually were turned down by both. So I wrote a registered letter to both and had a copy for the State Insurance Regulator and suggested 'let us reason together.' Ten days later, the claims got paid.

We never qualified for Medicaid and now we're both on Medicare and never resented those who did.

The article has more details so I'd recommend reading it and follow-up as necessary.

In high school French class, I learned Aesop's Fable of The Grasshopper and the Ant in French.

Unfortunately, too many of those who are self righteous believe in the final line of the fable when the grasshopper was starving in the winter and begged the ant for food. The ant responded, Dansez maintenant!

Unfortunately those who do resent Medicaid recipients selfishly believe that those who do are taking away from them.

They quote the few that cheat the system as a reason to deny the majority who deserve it.

In days of old, civilizations did not refuse to grow crops, because a percentage was lost to rot and vermin.

Today, that still happens, even with two legged vermin.

I just don't want the poor and their kids coughing and spitting in public. If they have HIV, treat it. If they have TB, treat it. If they have a social disease, treat it. We don't need a pool of infected individuals as there is enough already.

Of course, Jesus said we had to.

There was a movement to open up an ACA Special Enrollment Period nationwide, all states. It reached the point that many in the health industry were expecting the White House to roll out a plan on Friday, March 27.

Then politics happened ... I'll find a place to link the story over in FHoPol.

I know. I was expecting a Federal ACA SEP too and disappointed that there wasn't (NJ is on the Federal Exchange rather than its own).

However, I'm hoping the impact of no Federal SEP will be limited as most people who need Health Insurance due to losing their job will still qualify.

The people who are screwed are those who don't have insurance through their job + didn't buy it on the exchange + not in a State with a SEP. They are on the "Don't get sick" health plan, which is a bad bet during a pandemic.

COBRA can be very expensive. I remember taking the COBRA plan from my previous job to cover the gap for the preexisting condition clause on our new health plan from my new job, but it was costing me over $1000/mo. Under the COBRA plan, the employees must pay the full cost of the insurance, plus a small administrative premium. This can be extremely expensive depending on the plan you had previously paid by your employer. I never used the COBRA coverage during a year I was paying the high premium. For most people who lost a health plan due to unemployment, it would be unaffordable.
