Apparently it's a "no-go" just outside Cedar Springs in Michigan. Girlfriend said her aunt got "warned" today by the sheriff that she wasn't to be outside with the kids working in the garden in her own yard.

Um ok ?? I think that's a bit much... lol

Anyone else with some weird restrictions?

Obviously, the sheriff did not read the "Exceptions" written in the Executive Order 2020-21 (COVID-19) issued by the Michigan governor.

    Whitmer - Executive Order 2020-21 (COVID-19)
    Exceptions.
    1. Individuals may leave their home or place of residence, and travel as necessary:
      1. To engage in outdoor activity, including walking, hiking, running, cycling, or any other recreational activity consistent with remaining at least six feet from people from outside the individual’s household.

They give out tickets in some Cali counties. But not the homeless - which are as thick as thieves in some areas. but since they got no money .... no ticket.

I hope this turns out to be urban legend or fake news.

Never mind the exceptions that Salamander pointed out in the statewide Michigan order, it fails the Gov's Order at Line 2:

"2. Subject to the exceptions in section 7, all individuals currently living within the State of Michigan are ordered to stay at home or at their place of residence."

One's own yard obviously counts as "at home or at their place of residence."

Risking their lives for people who don’t appreciate it and probably to cowardly to do it themselves. Seemingly first to criticize....shocking.

So, this is now 3rd hand "information".

Likely that was not "the" Sheriff but a deputy. Some of them get things wrong occasionally too.
SHE should have called the real Sheriff......and YOU should not be inflaming the situation by trying to discredit efforts to control this horrible situation.

If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.
    Just STOP please.

Our governor in california said we are not to leave the house w/o a facemask on. What does that even mean? I gotta wear a mask when there's literally no one else around just to go out to the curb and check my mail!?

It's also stupid that they mandate any one that drives must have a facemask on also. Now if in a drive though, getting in and out like a delivery driver, or have the windows down, I agree, but with the windows up uhh HELLO!? The car does have a cabin filter that I'm sure does a hell of a lot better at filtering then the cloth some face masks are made of or even the paper disposable ones. Hell im sure my coffee filters do a better job then just cloth.

    Funny.....
I'm always VERY afraid that I'll "have" to use mine.... :(

So much so that I try to use LTL rounds when and where I can.

In the 1918 flu pandemic, not wearing a mask was illegal in some parts of America. What changed?

"On October 24, 1918, the city's elected legislative body, the Board of Supervisors of San Francisco, realizing that drastic action needed to be taken with over 4,000 cases recorded, unanimously passed the Influenza Mask Ordinance.

The wearing of face masks in public became mandatory on US soil for the first time."

Drastic times call for drastic measures. Overbearing in a lot of cases, but blanket policies work better than ones riddled with exceptions.

I think the OP's example was an error in judgement by the cops, but having a little patience in trying times, we'll all get there.

    Um ok...

Not trying to inflame. Rather get a few chuckles from the whole situation. Can’t be all doom & gloom every minute of the day. Which is why I asked if anyone else had any funny stories. Heresay or not.

Yes, shocking that the "risking their lives" mantra might be used to excuse stupid abuse of authority such as in the alleged incident of this thread.

Yes because his girlfriend heard it from her Aunt. Right, that alleged incident must have happened that way. Meanwhile officers are dying from COVID-19 exposure trying to do their job while people speculate on the internet. That’s a fact.

The police in my town practice social distancing, by showing up to work, and getting in their police cars a putting them in visible spots about town. They stay in them all day long.

Two things can be true at once.
Sometimes even more than two..... ;)
    There ARE some good LEOs.
    There ARE some bad LEOs.
There are also badly informed LEOs.

"Warning" people that they are in violation of a newly instituted county ordnance during a declared federal emergency does not meet my standard for "abuse of authority."
Even IF the LEO was a jerk.....I don't think that we'll be seeing this case before the SCOTUS:
    Qualified immunity - Wikipedia

There's a loooooooooooong history of LEO's in America both good and bad.
The reason why the stereotypical cop in some parts of the nation was of a certain lineage (think: Paddy wagon) was that it was a rough job....for rough men, and only socially (and some would say morally) disadvantaged people would be attracted to the work.

This (like many other things) actually goes all the way back to the Roman Empire, because:
    Cops.
Can't live WITH 'em.....Can't 'society' WITHOUT 'em!

"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf...."

I believe what we have here is a "Failure to Communicate".
I would suspect we just have a overly aggressive sheriff, that perhaps doesn't have the grasp on the protocols and rules.

I honestly don't know what protocols and rules they are applying or trying to apply in Cedar Spring Michigan, but at least where I'm living, and with all my relatives, some living out of state, even in Canada, the general application is you CAN be outside if you wish, basically go anywhere, with space to keep a recommended 6 ft. social distancing buffer ( as much as possible ). It's recommended you wear a mask or covering over your mouth, but it's not as of yet a requirement.
Before taking my personal outlook as gospel...check your local and state recommendations and rules.

I went for a walk yesterday, beautiful spring day. And found myself at a riverside park. There were a LOT of people out. I think people are getting stir crazy and just really want out.
But my observation was people traveled alone, or in "Family Pods" and strove to keep distance from each other. But activity was certainly not curtailed. People were launching boats, riding bikes, kayaking, and fishing, playing fetch with the dog.
I would say it was about 50/50 as far as people wearing masks.

If I was the Aunt in your story? I'd politely call the Sheriffs office, explain what happened and ask for clarification on the current rules.
If the Sheriff is right? Then it would be good to have that confirmed.
If the Sheriff is wrong? Then that need so be communicated to him, so that people are not being "warned" when simply trying to garden on their own property.

    Oh come on.
    Let's lighten up a bit.
This is a 3rd hand story, being shared. It's not being represented as anything BUT that.

I would be willing to suspect that 3rd hand or otherwise, something like this in totality did happen.
I don't take sharing the story, as being part of the problem, nor necessarily part of the solution. Even though as part of the solution I did recommend the Aunt call the Sheriffs department and politely seek clarification.

I've never liked the cliche statement "If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem". It's IMO one of those neat phrases that sound very precise and correct, but under scrutiny of what is REAL life....it's NOT often true. It's usually never that Black and White.
Usually situation, perspective, viewpoint, all conspire to put most of us in the definition of being some percentage of a solution and sometimes unfortunately sometimes some percentage of the problem, but rarely...is it either/or.

I have no problem with sharing the 3rd hand story here. We're all taking it as such.
And IMO...at most what the Aunt or Sheriff/Deputy need here, is clarification.
Nobody in this 3rd party story was conspiring to be part of the problem.
Sharing the story, IMO is also not part of a problem.

Where have you seen this? From what I can find it's county by county and in counties that have it the requirement is "when visiting businesses such as grocery stores that remain open to the public"
