my near 97yr'old dad has survived multiple bouts of flu / pneumonia over the past decade. Plus surviving two types of cancer 5 + years, this latest one he has will be strike three and he's on hospice. Breathing getting bad... so how does that 20% - 30% respiratory loss differ from regular flu / pneumonia. That data might give perspective, rather than just the raw fun fact.

It is believed lung capacity returns to near prior infection levels after recovery from most bacterial and viral pneumonias. However pneumonias can sometimes further worsen into ARDS which often leads to some degree of permanent lung scarring. This has been more common with COVID-19 among hospitalized patients than most respiratory illnesses.

    Notice that asterisk:

" *Data during this period are incomplete because of the lag in time between when the death occurred and when the death certificate is completed, submitted to NCHS and processed for reporting purposes. This delay can range from 1 week to 8 weeks or more, depending on the jurisdiction, age, and cause of death."

I.e. those death counts are not complete, it will take many weeks for all the reports to arrive and be included. And for the most recent report week, only about 47% of the expected deaths are logged so far.

For that end date of 4/4/2020, Worldometer is showing 8457 C-19 deaths. Today, 16691.

I sure hope tissue samples are retained or at least a chest X-ray to confirm coronavirus diagnosis. One irony are lay reports that more severe cases may be an overactive, immune response. I look forward to pathology studies that may give insights such as:

COVID-19: immunopathology and its implications for therapy

Severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is characterized by pneumonia, lymphopenia, exhausted lymphocytes and a cytokine storm. Significant antibody production is observed; however, whether this is protective or pathogenic remains to be determined. Defining the immunopathological changes in patients with COVID-19 provides potential targets for drug discovery and is important for clinical management.

Even if they have saved some sample, I somewhat doubt that the codes used on death certificate data will be changed retroactively.

i'm not sure this is correct. a number of doctors say that it has been efective when used properly in some cases.

No, those drugs do show some anti-viral effect outside the body.
We do have treatments for when the immune system overreacts though. Which may have been the case for why the Spanish flu killed so many young people.

yes, i may have the wrong drug. google searches show some immune system correlation in studies, but i'm not smart enough to understand what they are saying.

still, there is a lot of positive medical information regarding the malaria drug and covid, politics aside.

Happy Good Friday to you all. Still praying the world will be rid of this pestilence on Sunday. Hope there is enough of you doing the same! In Jesus' name.

Still, difficult to completely 'politics aside' it, when among the 'positive medical information' is a study being spun so that the patients who dropped out, moved to ICU, or died weren't counted in the result, then saying the drug was effective in 100% of the rest.

Stuff like that is pathognomonic of motives other than medical.
