This one is identified in the caption as being of an apoptotic cell.

Is that obvious in the pic? Can somebody in the know look at that and say "yup, that's an apoptotic cell"?

Characteristic morphological change in the apoptotic cell includes plasma membrane blebbing which is shown in the last pic in your comment. Just to caution linking apoptosis or programmed cell death to the diseased state only. It can certainly be triggered by a pathological condition such as COVID-19, but apoptosis occurs throughout the normal development of an organism and is very important in shaping an organism.

Here are very elementary lessons on apoptosis.

This is where testing beyond the ordinary walk-in patients and a few isolated populations, nursing homes and prisons, is needed. My preference is to identify blocks or areas based on population density to test everyone. This initial sampling can be used to project a more accurate COVID-19 density.

right now, we're in a testing crisis. the country will be open before enough testing is available. unless we get a 'breakthrough', as dr. birx said.

Certainly, the sampling bias is one criticism pointed out for the CA studies, this can be corrected by your suggestion. But the antibody test accuracy, especially of its specificity is far more problematic. Solving this problem is going to take a lot of time and money.

That'll give some idea of how many lurkers there are. Would be better if the test more random.

Kinda like the way they nail you for jury duty.

    Yes:p.

I trust doctors and the medical community more than I trust researchers;).

But the source can help with credibility(y).

Many researchers are medical doctors (M.D.). And certainly, anyone working on vaccine research is a part of the medical community regardless of the credential such as Ph.D.

But, what @bisco read is something like this? Will There Be a Coronavirus Vaccine? Maybe Not

When I read the link provided, it doesn't say there won't be a vaccine, it points out that there are many companies already in advanced testing for vaccines;).

While each company working on it might not be successful, there is a lot of smart folks focused on the issue:).

I'll take the odds that a vaccine is developed (y).

Testing in one thing, but developing an effective vaccine is very difficult at least. The point of the article is this...

The FDA has never approved a vaccine for humans that is effective against any member of the coronavirus family, which includes SARS, MERS, and several that cause the common cold. snip

At this point, it’s not a given that even an imperfect vaccine is a slam dunk. The way that the COVID-19 virus behaves out in the wild makes it hard to predict how it will respond to vaccination. In a sense, immunization is a way to let your body think it’s already had the disease by teaching its immune system to make antibodies against the pathogen. A recent study in China, however, found that many patients who actually had the disease showed very low levels of antibodies in their blood after they recovered — and in some cases had none at all. This might indicate that people who recover from the disease or get vaccinated against it might be able to catch it nonetheless. “We just don’t know yet,” Roper says.

Just remember never is a big word;).

We've got smart folks working on it, and we've solved a lot of issues that have caused society issues in the past. I can accept the "we don't know yet" claim, as things continue to evolve.

But to waive the white flag (or to suggest it), just spreads more fear at a time when we need to support those working on it to do their work and not distract them(y).

Noone said "Never". Not a single sentence in the article said or implied it is "impossible" to develop a vaccine against COVID-19. @bisco initial comment was this... "some researchers starting to doubt the possibilities of a vaccine". I find healthy skepticism and doubt are very important in the progress of science and medicine.

Look at the first sentence in your prior post: FDA has never approved a vaccine for a Coronavirus;).

So if we accept never from the governing body, we'd be in a world of hurt .

As I read the link, it seems the article slants off of this, which supports the articles title:whistle:.

As someone who has worked their career in the space of "this is the way we've always done it" and challenging the status quo through asking and understanding why, hearing never pushes me to want it more:).

I'm sure it does the same for those that are pushing uphill to get it done. But to say "unlikely" at this point in time does nothing other than spread more fear that is not needed. Research and development takes time and we haven't spent much time on it yet .

So "unlikely" is just more sensationalization to move the news needle(y).
