I tried to keep chickens, but even with the dogs, they got picked off if I truly let them free-range wander.

If I did the "build big chicken corral" version of "free range," which is what most folks around here use, and moved it around the property every day or so, it seemed like cheating, plus, a lot of work My pens were much bigger and more square than the one pictured, but gives an idea. I think the red-tail hawks enjoyed my "chicken days."

Scored some chicken meats today. Don't know how long they will last. But meat shelves are getting thinner every week. I may try ordering another case of pork belly soon.

I am not the marksman my father was or my brother is, but I do know how to shoot.

I just don't like killing -- and yes -- I know how stupid that sounds as we all kill to live. But, I will leave it

Gee, now I am depressed. Ah, well. doesn't take much these days. I have to pour a very small amount of concrete. Maybe that will cheer me up -- NOT.

Aye, I can't imbibe because of my various health issues...

Ten years ago, I worked our farm and my dreams were riding tall. Today, I would be thankful Lord, for any dream at all. But everything you gather is just more that you can lose.

Well, off to haul gallons of water, pounds of concrete mix.....

Boneless chicken breasts $40 a box in 40 pound packages as wholesalers try to get rid of what restaurants would buy. NC local news.

No shortage of product yet, just an inability to shift to consumer sized packaging.

... and don't have any deer around this neighborhood. That fence isn't anywhere near deer height.

Our restaurants are selling meal kits both cooked and raw, it’s like groceries but only to make a Texas Roadhouse steak dinner

It looks like season doesn't start until October 5 in the western 2/3rds of the state, October 19 in east. Bag limits look very high compared to where I hunted in my youth.

What needs to be opened up -- Earlier start date? Larger bag limits? Open up some areas closed due to human population density? Encourage more people to hunt them?

On the farm where I grew up, deer populations have grown enormously since my youth. They actually have been increasing continually since reappearing approximately during the Depression, after having been locally eliminated in the late 19th Century. They drove my mother out of her major flower raising hobby in the late 20th Century, but otherwise haven't interfered with any farm and ranch operations, so no artificial controls are contemplated.

Where I live now (primary home, when not assisting on the farm), deer sighting reports have increased during this Pandemic, though I think it is in part due to people spending more time at home and on watch. Some of the suburban Nextdoor posters were wondering what to do about them, as if simply watching, enjoying, and leaving them alone wasn't an option. Department of Fish and Wildlife declined to bother the deer in any way.

probably everything, but i'm no expert. around here, i thnk you can only hunt on 10 acres or more with permission.
maybe with everyone confined they could reduce that safely, idk.

peta folks have put tremendous pressure on public officials to cut down hunting, resulting in explosive growth.
food supply isn't ample, development has caused problems. deer spend more time grazing backyard gardens than in the woods.
but the biggest problem (unrelated to the virus) is ticks and lyme disease

Isn't that what started this whole mess to begin with?!?!

PITA not very effective at stopping hunting down South - and there's STILL a .........* "bumper* crop.

My baby girl blasted one that damaged her mastodon sized SUV enough for a skid truck to have to come and take the carsass away (truck - not deer)

Venison is probably better for you than Tyson but I'm thinking that dot.FDA.gov ain't too keen on selling bush meat......even if the bushes are local.

It's a distinction without much of a difference, but I thought it was kinda ironic that people are specu-guessing about a meat shortage when all of the restaurants are closed......and a possible solution would be..............wait for it(!!)..........wild caught meat.

i've heard of it, but not heard of it being an issue (around here). i think the who should concentrate on bats and china.
i have no issue with keeping wild venison out of the food chain
