How to Reset Maint Required Icon

I use a OBDII reader to reset maintenance lights. Now, I just bought my Prius Saturday so maybe there's something I don't know about the Prius specifically, but the OBDII reader works my Insight so I'd be surprised if it wouldn't work with the Prius. It provides alot of other great information about the car, too (though not as much as the CAN-view would).

I just changed oil in my '05 a while back, and it's pretty simple. Make sure the odometer display is on ODO when you turn off the car. Push the ODO button and hold it in. Start the car as normal. You should see sort of a countdown, then all 0's, and then release the ODO button, you're done.

 

From my FAQ:

Turn the power switch IG-ON and make sure that the ODO/TRIP meter is displaying the odometer.
Turn the power switch OFF.
While pushing the ODO button, turn the power switch IG-ON.
The reminder light will flash until the reset is completed.
The reset is complete when the reminder light turns OFF. Release the ODO button.
After the reset, the ODO/TRIP meter displays as a set of zeros for 1 second, then displays your normal odometer mileage.

That's hard to believe with instructions abounding - in the Owner's Manual - online in PriusChat and PriusOnline. I also read last Winter about people using black tape to cover the "Cold Weather" icon. Perhaps she could get her spouse or SO to follow the simple instructions herein.

IIRC, this is very close to the instructions on how to turn the reverse beeper off and on.

 

The Prius manual is actually very well written compared to other manuals I've seen for products made in the Orient.

For a substantial number of forum members it's just much easier to ask a question than to look for the answer in the owners manual. B)

It is a well written manual, but there are some things not there that I'd expect to find, such as how to clean/replace the cabin air filter. I'd prefer more stuff like that, if anyone from Toyota is watching.

From my point of view, the problem is not how well it is written, but the organization of it's indexing.

I found the cabin air filter replacement procedure the first time I looked through the owner's manual. I wasn't looking for that, I was looking for something else at the time. I would have thought it would be under "Do it yourself Maintenance", but it was on pp 188-189.

I never was able to find the reference to resetting the maintenance icon. What section and page was that on?

I did find a reference somewhere (I don't have the manual in hand now), but it referred to using the Info Menu and Maintenance. No reference was made do using ODO to reset it.

Now that I see the reset is associated with the odometer, I was able to find it, but I didn't have a clue as to where to look before that point. That turned out to be on pages 122-123.

Actually, the manual does explain things reasonably well, but unless you know where to look, it can take hours rereading the entire manual.

A big help would not be simply say the equivalent of RTFM, but tell where to look for the description.

This is a good example of why we should be polite. In Barb's 2005 manual the cabin air filter instructions are right where Dave says. In my 2006 manual, the cabin air filter replacement instructions were removed, or at least moved to where I can't find them. And yes, I have read both the 2005 and 2006 manuals cover to cover when the cars were new.

However, there is a couple page getting started guide and a couple pages pointing to where and what all the controls are. I have little sympathy for people who couldn't even be bothered to look at those.

So let's not just say RTFM to people with questions that seem naive, but I see no reason to spend pages of drivel chewing out people who ANSWER THE QUESTION along with a suggestion that looking at the car's documentation might be a good idea.

Tom,

I was going to ask if there were different versions of the Owner's Manual that caused confusion. You answered that question. I downloaded the 2006 OM (from tecinfo.toyota.com) and found the cabin air filter replacement instructions. They're still in the airconditioning section, but the pages are 298-300 in that version of the manual.

It's a lot easier to locate something in a set of pdf files than using the index, so I'll probably use that approach from now on.

That's referring to the maintenance screen that comes with packages that include NAV. From there you can set several maintenance items, such as tires, coolant, oil, filters, etc. When the interval that you set elapses, then an alert is displayed on the screen if the NAV 'I Agree' has been initiated for that trip that the alert is triggered.

The Maint. Req. light is a separate item. I don't believe there's any way to reset that with an ODBII scanner.
I believe the maint. req. reset is described in the owner's manual where oil changes are discussed.

 

Thank you for the simplified instructions. My 08 Prius just passed 127K on it's odometer, and that light came on. Wasn't sure what it refers to, since I did not get an owner's manual. I eventually have acquired an 07 manual, but found rather quickly that even fuse locations are not the same from one year to the next.

Charles - So this Black tape info was proved out in my First cruise on the USS Forrestal. I was on a night mission to the target on an island called Avago Nisi off Greece in the Mediterranean. After my first roll in and release of practice bombs . The Fire Warning light in my A&E Corsair ll's cockpit came on. I was freaked out as I was 200+ mile from the ship. After my Skipper came up and checked my underside with his flashlight, he told me to get back to the ship ASAP. I was somewhat relieved but faced the perplexing issue of a flashing red light in the cockpit at night. With a groundspeed of 400 knots I relaxed enough to set the autopilot and remembered the piece of electrical tape on my kneeboard. I gently placed it over the flashing light and viola' only the minor fear of the plane exploding beset me. Black tap saved me a lot of anxiety that night.
