    Not putting food on the table, will kill people too, and in very large numbers. A least-overall-death approach will be somewhere in the middle-ish zone, neither fully open nor fully locked down at home. Just what that optimum point is, is subject to intense debate among mostly non-experts.

    As for my grandparents? The last one died decades ago. Even my biological parents are long dead. All I have left is a step-parent turned adoptive parent. Who has already lived far longer than he expected and planned, and is satisfied with the good life he lived. He is in very frail condition, and had filled out his DNR before this pandemic.

    So he actually isn't concerned about this virus, he expects to move on soon anyway. And most likely before this pandemic is really over, even if he doesn't catch the virus at all.

    It is very noble for you to sacrifice your life for the greater good, so they can be fed.

    The doomed Jews at Auschwitz Birkenau had a corollary to the expression;

    Arbeit macht frei
    durch Krematorium nummer drei

    I expected this thread to go Godwin in far less than 42 posts......

    People must be starting to relax a little.

    I assume that you have heard of "planned obsolescence." No doubt it was already in place when you bought your washer and dryer 25 years ago (I first read about it more than 50 years ago -- Vance Packard: "The Waste Makers"), but has no doubt been implemented more fully since then. The washer we bought 20 years ago was repaired under warranty once (would have cost about one-third of the original cost if not for the warranty) then again by me when it was about 10 years old (would not have been worth paying someone for three hours labor plus parts). I attempted the same repair again about six years later (it was a design flaw), but was unable to get the parts apart to do the replacement. We now have 4-yr-old washer and dryer that cost about $1000 (total), but I'm not going to claim that they will still be working in another 20 yrs time. Depending on what goes wrong when, they may not be repairable because the manufacturer has decided to quit making parts.

    Oh, and many people do have savings, but they are not readily accessible, or are accessible only by taking a significant tax hit.

    I do not know.

    Mike looks like @Mendel Leisk only a lot less maple-leafy.
    I have a "Custom Title" block above the highly insensitive binary gender selection block.
