Feeling contankerous. Attached article is on the "rolling stop", kind of an oxymoron?

The big problem with rolling stops - The Globe and Mail

The broad white line at stop signs: remember them from Driver Ed? Bring the car to a full stop, completely behind that line? Ever wonder why? Do you still do it? All the time?

How about when turning right* on a red light? Again, there's a broad white line, often defining one border of a crosswalk. Do come to a full stop in that scenario?

If not, do you have valid reasons? You're rushed? Nobody does it? I don't want to get honked at by the guy behind me? There was nobody coming?

    * For right side of road driving.

Personally, I stop. Why, because my ol' grandad explained the difference to me when he was teaching me to drive (in granma's old Gremlin) by smacking the top of my head with a ruler and asked if I wanted him to slow down or stop. That lesson has stuck with me my entire life...…...too bad he didn't have a lesson like that for speeding...I may have avoided a couple K worth of tickets in my younger years..

The last time I was stopped by the constabulary was over 6 years ago.

It was o-dark-thirty and I had just been yanked out of bed for an E911 trouble in my office.
When I got to an intersection on a dark, empty, county crossroads.....I very uncharacteristically did a slow-and-go and made a right.

In my rear-view mirror......I saw a dome light snap on.

By the time the Sheriff's Deputy had pulled onto the road I was already stopped with the window open, dome light on, glove box open, and pulled far enough off the road for HIM to pull all the way off the road and still use his car as a barrier against all of the traffic that wasn't on the road at 0300.

He smirked at me and said "You do this a lot?"
I explained that I almost never did either one...run a stop sign OR get pulled over.....but that we both wanted the same thing which is to untie our own shoes later that day.
I also explained, when asked, that my red puffy eyes were from the fact that I just got up from bed and why.

Long story short.....He let me go, but only (he said) because I had military plate and I didn't give him attitude.

    Takeaway:
He wasn't specifically THERE to catch slow-and-go drivers...who, at 0300 in BFE were very unlikely to cause an accident.
He was THERE because people who habitually don't stop at stop signs usually are ALSO a little lax about other things.....paying for insurance, keeping a valid driver's license, driving sober, etc....

I still think about that sometimes in the middle of the night when I come to a full and complete stop at a lonely county cross-roads. ;)

I remember Drivers Ed from WAY back now...in high school. And yes, we were taught that we were suppose to always stop before those white lines.
But the article technically is more about rolling stops...which is NOT stopping at all.
    That I NEVER do.
May I occasionally come to a complete stop at some place slightly past those white lines?
    "Cough" I admit to nothing.

But I think there is a significant difference between rolling without stopping through any intersection or stop, and maybe occasionally pulling out or stopping beyond the lines, often to facilitate a better view of possible oncoming traffic.

Speeding worse I'd say, for a host of reasons. Still, I think rolling stops are a factor in T-bones and pedestrian hits?

i have never understood the problem with a rolling (non)stop when you can easily see in both directions

I guess the thing, as @ETC(SS) alluded to, is just do it all the time, or it can erode down to never.

FWIW, around here almost no one does a legal stop.

If the intersection is a busy multi-way stop and people are looking for each others' stops to work out who goes next. That's when it's a problem.

"Oh you haven't stopped yet? clearly you won't be going for a bit, so it's my turn."

But hey, we can meet in the middle... of the intersection :ROFLMAO:

What gives me fits: I'm rolling through an intersection on a green light, there's an oncoming left turner angled into his turn and slightly rolling, and a guy's doing a rolling stop across the crosswalk on my right. Maybe he's got tinted windows too.

Or: I'm a pedestrian, walking a long a main street sidewalk, about to step into the right side a side street, with a crosswalk. A car's rolling up on the side street, to my left, going to turn right onto the main street, and the driver's looking to his left for traffic, has no clue that I'm there, and more'n likely us going to roll it. Maybe slowly, maybe with near-zero hesitation. Who knows.

    Need some pictures. Later.
