I've seen this problem more than once... The corrosion connecting the modules is bad, so bad that the corrosion is also on the voltage sensing wires where they plug into the hybrid battery ECU, which eventually shorts out the ECU.

While most dealers charge $5K to fix... Myself and other charge $500 to 1) replace w/used battery ECU ($50), 2) Replace voltage sensor harness aka: Wire Frame No2 ($50) 3) Replace bus bars and nuts with new or clean, 4) full diagnostics on all 28 modules, which includes 3 increasingly deeper discharges and recharge aka: reconditioning. 5) replace bad modules.

If you're rich and you have plenty of money than yes a brand new pack is the way to go... But if wasting money hurts you... Then no...

But more to the point, if your 12v battery is really that old (I'm skeptical) that's the first thing to deal with and might solve all you problems...
