I usually have my dad get the filter. I'm going to change my oil Monday. My dad told me to lookup the oil online. The maintenance light goes on every 5000 miles. I believe the synthetic oil as 0W20. My Prius is an '08 if that helps.

How do I find the filter that I need? Do I just remove it or is there a way to lookup online? Thanks!

It's the same for all Gen 2 Prius and probably the same one that fits many other Toyota products. Any auto parts store should have it, or you could order it through Amazon

The manufacturer recommended oil for the Gen 2 1.5liter engine would be 5w-30. Many people prefer full synthetic like Mobil 1, but other brands are also available. Sometimes different temperature environments require different oil weights, but 5W-30 is pretty safe for anywhere in the 48 states.

The oil filter is Toyota 90915-YZZF2. I've also used NAPAs brand Platinum Oil Filter #41394

If you've got a dealership nearby: tell them you need the drain bolt washer and oil filter for an 09 Prius. They'll likely have bottled quarts of (the spec'd) Toyota 5W30 as well.

I saw your other thread and you're a high mileage driver.

It may be debated here but I'd get Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30, and Fram XG4967. Both available at Walmart, 5 qt jug most cost effective. (Don't forget to submit for Mobil 1 rebate I believe they are having). Then you don't need to worry for 20k mi or 1 yr, whichever comes first.

Have you determined whether your Gen2 is consuming oil?

If so, you may want to consider thicker oil and more frequent oil change interval. Worked on my Gen2. I used to consume 1/2 quart of oil every 1600 to 1800 miles. Currently, consuming virtually nil.

I used Shell Rotella 40W for about 12k miles (over three oil changes). Apparently frequent oil changes and detergent in oil has decarboned the oil control rings.

    Food for thought.

PS Last oil change, I switched to Shell Rotella 15W-40.

My Prius has about 81,000 miles. Is that considered high mileage? Doesn't seem like it to me.

    Mine is every 5k miles.
I can check how much oil is left after driving 5k miles if that works

I thought Prius needed to be changed every 5k or 6 months.

The dealership is going to charge an arm and a leg tho. Any other recommendations on oil and what others use for 5W30?

Most walkmarts around here carry the Toyota Oil Filter so I stick with that. Most synthetic oil is all made by the same companies these days so its all pretty good stuff. I used mobile 1 5w-30 for years until I found costco's new oil. 2 5qt jugs for like $25, thats half the cost of mobile 1 and Project farm youtube made a video testing it and its great stuff.

True, but this oil is backed by Mobil to last 1 yr or 20k miles.

I can't even begin to imagine the hoops you would have to jump through to make a claim. The fine print, including requirements to submit to arbitration, makes it more than likely you would spend months if not years beating your head against the wall before they would honor any claims!

That being said, it is a good brand, and there is no reason not to trust it to perform!

I used to buy cheap Chinese scooters for the kids before they grew up, and I performed all the maintenance on them. GY6 engines are extraordinarily simple, air cooled with all 1960s technology. The kids drove em like they stole em, in the heat of Las Vegas, and I used dollar store oil in them, and replaced the oil every 3k, never had any issues related to oil failure. Point is, people put to much thought into oil qualities, when the most important thing is frequency of oil changes. Even the best oil can do nothing about metallic shavings (get a magnetic oil drain bolt and you'll see every engine has some shavings), but frequent oil changes will help remove them before too much damage is done!

The warranty terms do not have fine print that's too complicated. Basically asks for a access to the engine and oil sample. Joe, please forgive me for quoting your prior post, is driving A LOT:

"I drove 750 miles for a medical school interview and another 1600 miles on another road trip to West Virginia. I am considering driving another 2200 miles. I just got my Prius and am nervous about putting on a lot of miles. It has about 71,000 miles. Should I rent a car and be concerned about the miles? It will be mostly highway miles. I want my Prius to last a long time."

I'm sure it will likely die down when he starts school but.

I'm done driving it long distances. In October about 30-40 miles for school though

Of course use whatever ILSAC rated oil you wish to use. Even though we are currently getting around 5k miles a year, Mobil 1 AP is still the oil I use, and change yearly.

For the first few years the car sat in the garage with a battery maintainer for the 12 V. No apparent bad effect on healthy/new battery...

I just remembered this little trick, to answer your original (thread title) question on finding the correct oil filter.

Go to fram.com . Select "Parts Search". Enter your car information. Select a filter, then go to "Competitor Comparison". A list of cross reference part numbers for you is given...
