They stole something, that doesn't mean they should die. Wth is wrong with you?

Suddenly their not murder is the same as no justice?

Someone stealing cats is not living their best life. Have a little compassion. Have them caught, tried, and punished. You get restitution. Maybe their life improves, not likely in the good ol USofA.

"They stole my thing! They should die!" is the position of a psychopath.

I would. Also, I'd be impressed, it would take some serious work to clear out my apartment.

But yes, I absolutely would have compassion for them. I know this, because I was raised to care about other people. I know this, because I've had things of great value stolen, and luckily got them back, but then asked for leniency for them.

    Yes, I did feel violated.
    Yes, I was angry.
But I still cared about them.

You don't become a theif because your life is going great.

You are required to have better ethics than the culture in which you are raised.

You are required to give a shit.

Be a better person, and give the tiniest bit of a shit for a person who is desperate enough to steal from you.

You can call me ignorant all you want, but all I see is your ego. Get over yourself. You have my pity. Be better.

Sorry, but turning the other cheek merely allows you to be slapped on that one also. You can't save everyone. Society would be much better off with some individuals not present. Open your eyes and experience the real world.

The justice system is non-functional. Catch and release...so someone can have 100 arrests? Makes no sense to the normal hard working guy. Makes sense to the bleeding heart type.

Horse thieves used to be shot or hung....when punishment is a joke, there is no deterrent to doing the deed.

You sound like the character of Inspector Javert in Les Misérables.

You have a Gen 2 2007 Prius. Your car is the perfect candidate for having the catalytic converter stolen.

Just wonder what you'll do if that happens.

I've come to recognize the world has it's fair share of POS people that have no problem taking advantage of others. Thinking they can be changed is a waste of time. A bit like the scorpion and the frog story. It's in their nature. At some point all the bleeding hearts may or may not come to realize you can't change everyone. Not everyone is a good person, not even deep down inside.

Your car is the perfect candidate for having the catalytic converter stolen.

Not necessarily...be preemptive and just install an aftermarket exhaust ahead of time, like me...costs less than a shield and 100% legit in our state...

I currently have a handful of aftermarket cats and 3 complete oem exhaust assemblies in my garage...

More or less, I think I have it covered, however the situation unfolds.

Glad you're covered. My plan is that I currently have enough savings to buy any car in the lot at the Toyota dealer that I want in cash. I paid cash for the 2012 Prius v and started saving for my new one on the same day.

No need to work, just hobbies to keep me busy. With only 23k miles, it hard to justify getting a new car.

Wasn't sure what the thieves were after so read up on it there after the rhodium in the cat which is more valuable than gold. Its sold over seas organized crime is involved. So its professional thieves taking them off the car or thieves with organized crime connections.
Its really bad in the UK too. Affecting many hybrids.

Lots of anti theft plates for the cat though but some require drilling etc:

Thief would not be happy if both the police report and the tv reporter stated on air that the catalytic was painted orange. If the scrap dealer heard of it, it is not likely they would want to buy it.

A mistake you're making is thinking a thief cares about it being painted or engraved. They're thieves, why would they? If they want it, they're going to take it. Are you counting on their good judgement? On their reasoning ability? Fear of consequences? A hand-feld turbo torch is 25 bucks and can use either a small $5 propane or $10 mapp gas cylinder. 2000F+ will burn the paint off like it was water.

    Frog and scorpion........

Too many people make the mistake of assuming everyone is sensible. We assume every person is going to do what a normally sensible or normally reasonable person would do, because we don't comprehend how AFU some peoples thought processes are. That's what gets people in bad situations, because it doesn't make sense to us that someone would do 'that'.

It's why cops have to be super defensive on every traffic stop and every 'contact' they make. Most people, and all the bleeding heart type, think every encounter they have is with a 'normally reasoning' person. It only takes one 'not normally sensible' reaction while their guard is down for them to end up dead. If you make 50 'contacts' a day, the chances of meeting that 'not normal' person gets pretty high. Find a 50 shot revolver and play russian roulette with it every day. How willing would a person be to pull the trigger once a day, every day? Most cops are pulling it 50 times a day. They just have to hope that round is a dud or they have to take enough precautions to ensure it misses.

See below. They will be opening the catalytic converter and extracting the rhodium, that's where the value is. Your orange container will be in the trash.

Your post prompted me to do some research. Each converter has approx 5g of rhodium. The Rhodium market has gone wild and it is selling for almost $10,000 an ounce. There are also other valuable metals in the converter. The thieves just extract the valuable metals inside and toss the rest of the converter.

The Prius is a prime target. Since hybrid cars have two power sources - electric and gas - the catalytic converter is used less frequently to process pollutants. The metals are less likely to corrode, meaning they are worth more and thus attractive to thieves.

The exhaust has been painted all the way to the exhaust manifold. Like orange cones on the roadway, it provides a clear warning to would be thieves.

The Prius v has probably the most expensive cat of all Prius models.

Even with four correctly placed cuts on the system with a Sawzall, the thief will be drenched with coolant. And, to get the cats, he's got a way to go.

The replacement is probably a non-stock item and might even have to be shipped from Japan.

A few extra bucks to pay to deter theft is worth the bother and inconvenience of a theft.

So, for those doubters, your comments are welcomed as well as the sentiment probably by the thieves.

Anything to make it harder to steal something is usually good.
The problem is, the thief will just go somewhere else, so, another victim.
Getting rid of the thief, resolves the problem.

    Not true or false!

Catalytic converters operate at over 1000 degrees F. The heating-cooling cycle of operating at lower temperatures that don't "burn off" pollutants, means that hybrid cats must have a higher capacity. Blowby from a poorly maintained EGR system can further decay and clog a converter.

ICE only vehicles reach a constant operating temperature and maintains it until the shutdown of the car. That cycle is more efficient and requires a smaller cat.

Like mice chewing on the car's wiring or entering the passenger compartment, you can't kill the all. You deter them from entering.

With the right poison, you can. :)
It is not easy, but possible. It all depends on how bad you want to stop them.

So you are saying that the Prius has a larger cat that would be more attractive to thieves because it would have more of the metals thieves want.
