Why don't you like the large format screen in the Prime?

    LOL. I needed a new set of tires for my previous PRIME Premium, but I didn't throw it away. I just traded it for a new 2020 PRIME LE with smaller more functional screen and comfortable cloth seat... and a brand new set of tires.;)

    Yeah, even with street price for the displays (either), add labour and taxes, you're likely back over $6K out the door. New primes (in the States) are going for what $20~22K with all the green discounts?

    The resolution of the 11.6" screen is full HD - 1920x1080. The 7" screen is SVGA and the 6" is VGA.

    So.. yeah when people say the resolution is poor, well it has one of the best resolution for an in-car entertainment system. The majority of cars with 6-8" screens are in the VGA or SVGA resolution category. I've seen some specifications that say uprated screens are "720" (doesn't give the resolution but I'm guessing 1280x720 since it's a landscape format MFD rather than portrait) and that was for Hyundai/Genesis. The screen that looked the sharpest was the Gen 2.5 screen (2006-2009) with the upgraded MFD that has the backup camera. That definitely isn't HD resolution but it was sharp. I guess it had a higher dpi than the 11.6" MFD cause it definitely looked sharper than any screen on our Primes.

    I don't hate the screen but I think it's severely underutilized and it's clear that Toyota tried to fit the format of their own navigation screen into the 11.6" format rather than actually integrating the software properly for that size. I don't like the "floating" format of the "split-screen" information (i.e. Upcoming Exits in "Freeway" mode or the mini map insert in "Dual Map" mode).

    The video mode takes up half the screen and there's a border within that bottom half which makes it small. Tesla allows the full use of the 15" screen on the Model 3 for example.

    They could've had a 360° camera system to utilize the full screen with one half showing the backup camera and the other half showing the top-down look. Instead, we have a half-screen image of the backup camera - of which the camera quality appears worse than my Gen 3's. (and similar quality to the 2014-2019 Corolla with the 7" screen).

    Then there's the glare from the front passenger side window in the late afternoon.

    Toyota also bungled the hybrid software for EV driving so I can't see regen in the Consumption screen (so E blocks or leaf cars... you have to go 3 or 4 menus deep to find "Regen last minute and Regen trip total" and it takes up the whole screen). This also affects the MID where the Consumption Screen in metric format is useless since the scale is useless.

    Oh and this isn't specific to the large screen but to the current Toyota headunits - they reboot for no apparent reason. Both our 7" and 11.6" units have done so - not as frequent as some members here. Mine has done it twice that I've noticed in the last year and a half. The 2016 at least half a dozen times but it's 4 years old).

    Resolution is also going to depend on the input and program.
    Cheap camera with great display isn't going to overcome the camera's resolution.

    I personally like the 11.6” screen, especially the big map.

    However, there certainly are things I don’t like about it. Most importantly, it’s mounted too low; it takes my eyes too far off the road!

    Also, the touch targets are often too small, requiring really-precise aim while you’re trying to drive.

    All in all though, I’m fine with it.

    Independent of the screen, I really recommend getting the Advanced trim, because of the HUD, rear cross-traffic alert, blindspot monitoring, and auto-wipers. To me those are excellent safety and/or convenience features!

    It's not so much the resolution as the pixel density that makes it fuzzy, or maybe the data being fed to it as @Trollbait mentioned. I'm a little jaded by the 218 ppi on my 5k iMac and especially by the 458 ppi on my phone. At 5-3/4" wide, the display should be about 188 ppi. Given that it's almost as dense as my iMac's display, I'd think it would be almost as sharp at the same distance. But it's not even close. That makes me wonder if they're feeding SD data to an HD screen thinking it'll look like HD. It won't. Another sign of poor implementation.

    Like you, I don't hate it. It's just sad that with the specs it has, it doesn't look better and do more. I wonder if they didn't leave some of their engineers pulling out their hair in frustration. :cry:

    Edit to add: contrast ratio on the display is another big issue for me. For something that sees such extremes in lighting, you'd think it would be a little stronger in that area.

    I really like it. In fact, it was one of the reasons I bought the car. I much prefer the touch screen controls too, and if it had only physical knobs instead of touch controls, it would have made my decision to purchase more difficult. I have no problem reaching/adjusting the controls that I need, and the map is a good size. I don't understand the complaints about the big screen at all.

    Like. Admittedly, I agree only up to a point, but thumbs-up nevertheless.

    For me, the main benefit is the monster map, and to me, that’s worth the downside of not being able to run controls by feel.

    Toyota’s GUI/OS strikes me as like the Prime’s driving performance: “it’s fine.” Nothing amazing but it works.

    I agree. It could be a dpi issue or Toyota upscaling their standard software that was designed for 7-8” screens. The 12.3” screens on some Toyota and Lexus models look pretty good (but still get some flak from some auto reviewers).

    Yes. I had to adjust the contrast and brightness as well on my screen but mostly for the backup camera.

    Our 2005 Prius was one of the first touchscreen cars in Canada. (The RX300 from 1998 was the earliest and maybe some of the Jaguars). I realize it might be even earlier in the US especially since you have optional navigation on some cars that we never got as an option as it was expensive and our roads weren’t very well mapped out yet.)

    Edit: Never mind. Buick had a touchscreen on the 1988-1989 Reatta

    I think the big screen in the 2017 advance trim was intended to mimic the portrait-oriented big screen in the Tesla. It was definitely a 'cool' thing found only in the Prime and Tesla.

    As noted elsewhere, the back-up image fills the full width of the screen. Having it fill the height would not add any useful information.

    We keep a "Swiffer" anti-static cloth in the arm-rest console. It is an inexpensive and convenient way to wipe dust of the screen.

    Generally, I use the buttons on the steering wheel to control the audio volume and to change "channels" between presets.

    What I don't like is having to use the touch-screen to de-fog the windshield if you don't want to run the gasoline engine which starts when the front defroster button is used.

    But, all things considered, after three years I am still enjoying this car. It comfortable (and I am a BIG bear) and, because I make lots of short city trips, it's great not to have to "crank" an internal combustion engine making cold starts.

    I test-drove the base and upgrade versions of the Prime on a warm sunny day last August. I immediately noticed the glare on the large screen and the "back-sauna" vinyl seats on the upgrade model, which made the smaller screen and breathable cloth seats of the base model an easy choice for me. I would have liked a few of the upper-model features like the JBL sound system and head-up display, but I'm happy with my choice.

    Living down South, in Austin TX, I felt … betrayed? ... that cloth seats weren’t even an option on the top trim level. However, it’s been not nearly as bad a concern as I expected, in part because we got the mostly-white seats of the “moonstone” interior (that plus remote climate). Could be better though, yes.
