Mechanical noise when starting engine

    Thanks for the video link. I was able to do the necessary work based on this video. The car is running great now. On cleaning the intake manifold the vent tubes were totally clogged. I bought a bore brush to clean them out along with brake cleaner. I never imagined so much carbon was present on the surfaces. Everything went well. Thanks again!

    Does it sound sort of like a cooling fan hitting the shroud?

    Thanks, I fixed that part of the problem following your advice. But the car has another problem. The car runs rough at times, clears up and gets rough again. I scanned for the DTC codes, and the following codes are showing from the scan: P0300, PO301, PO302, & PO441. I replaced all the spark plugs and ignition coils because the car has 299K miles. It never had a tune-up before. It still runs rough at times. I have to investigate the PO441 code. Do you have any suggestions for a remedy for this situation? Thanks again for your help.

    Since the cleaning a new problem has occurred. The #1 & #2 cylinders are misfiring. the DTC codes are: P0300, PO301, PO302, & PO441.     That code is for a large vacuum leak;).

    You sure everything was reassembled correctly and all hose connections were properly done:whistle:?

    Keep an eye on the engine coolant reservoir as you might have a head gasket failure:cool:.

    Yikes. I have to admit, I feel like once a Gen3 owner hears the start up noises, coolant is already getting into the cylinders, and the head gasket has already been compromised. Its beyond a clogged EGR circuit/cooler at that point.....

    Perhaps this could help.. also, you may want to check PCV valve, if you haven't cleaned it or replaced it recently..

    I meant to get back to you sooner. I found a loose vac hose and securely connected it. The engine started right up and ran smoothe for about 3 minutes then shut down with a dashboard display read - CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM. The scanner reads a P3190 code. I cleared the DTC code and started the engine a second time. It runs for about 1 minute then shuts down again with the same DTC code and display readout. What can be wrong with it now? I don't have a clue. Thanks for your help again.

    How much gas do you have in the Prius?

    Did you clean the MAF sensor?

    How'd you reset the code?

    P3190 : the engine is running, but producing less than 20% of the target torque. The process to diagnose is not very hybrid-specific, just all the usual stuff you would look at if a gasoline engine were bogging down and producing minimal power. There are about nine pages of workup for that code in the repair manual, which could help for getting ideas.

    I had startup noises at 69K. After the EGR, intake manifold and PCV valve cleanse plus adding an OCC - no more startup bang. Engine coolant holds steady. Stay on emptying the OCC or it will come back. 96k miles now

    I have a full tank of gas. I cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner. I reset the DTC with a hand scanner.

    What if you pulled the 12 volt lead and try a hard reset;).

    Give that a shot and see if it works(y).

    Should I replace the MAF with a new one? The only code showing is the P3190 code. What about the O2 sensor? Does that affect the P3190 reading? I could clean it or replace it. Other than those two items I can't figure else what to look for. Logically, there must be something else affecting the engine. Just short of a bad ECM.

    I disconnected the 12v battery cable and waited 5 minutes before reconnecting it again. The engine started and ran for about 2 minutes then shutdown again with the same readout as before but with a strong smell of fuel. CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM. So there is something else in the system that is generating this trouble code. Could it have to do with the air/fuel ratio because of the smell of fuel? Or worse, is it the hybrid battery? What are your thoughts on this?
