I have contacted a Toyota dealer and they've told me it's the compressor. But for the sake of the argument, say there telling me that to lure me into spending more money. I found a YouTube video with the same sound, saying it's the compressor. And say that's some misinformed driver. A user here in PriusChat who seems knowledgeable on air conditioner units, as it's in his name, tells me its likle9 the compressor. I haven't ruled out the blower motor but have strong evidence for the compressor.

Yes I heard the sound coming from the compressor that’s what my ears picked up. As the compressor satisfies and whines back down or shuts off momentarily the fans will follow and you will lose airflow and then the compressor once again gets the signal to start back up and then there’s a delay and the fans will start back up.As the compressor satisfies and winds back down or shut off momentarily the fans will follow and you will lose airflow and then the compressor once again gets the signal to start back up and then there’s a delay in the fans will start back up.

What my ears were tuned into what is the RPM of your compressor.

I’m going to give you a test to perform. If your weather is in the 80s or 90s run your air conditioning on full speed put it in fresh air mode not recycle. Open up all your doors. Let it run for about 10 minutes like this. Confirm your cabin air filter has been changed because if you have a slightly restricted cabin air filter it will change the outcome give a false diagnosis if it’s too restricted.

Apparently you should have researched by now and you know which one of your air-conditioning lines is the suction line the return vapor will be the cold one. 1: after 10 minutes of running tell me if you see wet droplets of condensation forming on the line. I believe if you look at some of my videos I recorded the water condensation forming on the suction line on some of the Prius. I sometimes even video the driver and passenger front roll up windows because of the cold air coming out of the dash you will start getting condensation like a fog forming on the side glass windows after I do a recharge. Usually if I cannot get called condensation forming on the windows so I could write my name in it I know to look for more work something is wrong.
2: now take a recording with your phone a second time and try to get very close or at least listen for the compressor this is the most important noise that I need to hear. And when you put your hand on the suction line that has lots of wet condensation droplets form all over the Aluminum this is a good sign. If it is not then it is a bad sign.

OK. That is some real evidence that is piling up.....and not just a wild guess from one person.

BUT......I am not sorry I made the posts that I DID because jumping right to the most expensive part possible without good evidence is NOT a good thing to do. Ever.

I AM trying to help......by looking at things from all the angles.
Anyone who doesn't appreciated that can just ignore and move on.

YOU are the one who made the claim.....that "topping up" your AC with refrigerant "is illegal in most states".
For that to be true, it would have to be illegal in at least 26 states.
Prove it with some actual evidence.
I believe that it is "illegal" in ZERO states.

YOU are claiming I'm wrong. You prove me wrong.

NOPE. That's not the way it works.
If you can't back up your claim, then you are just blowing smoke.

Nice try. Just keep lying all you want and make others prove you wrong.
Like I said, that's not how it works.
But it appears that you HAVE no evidence to back up your statement so that pretty much tells the story.
    I quit.

Both of you are right and wrong and halfway in between. Depends you are in that’s the United States then federal EPA. Can you have your local state EPA possibly a second entity like here in California.( California air resources board )RMP: Service Technicians & Contractors | California Air Resources Board

then we have the (Bay Area Air Quality Management District). https://www.baaqmd.gov/search?q=Automotive%20air-conditioning

    We also have the
( California Bureau of Automotive repair) which has a whole separate section on the air-conditioning repair. It’s designed in a way it’s hard to fine just the way the government works it’s , It’s purely ridiculous ridiculous ?.
    https://www.bar.ca.gov/serp.aspx?q=air-conditioning%20repair
Here in California as of 2018 the automotive gear over repair it is now mandated that every shop performing any kind of air conditioning service must and will have and required to possess a refrigerant identifier to be used on every vehicle serviced prior to recovering the refrigerant

Now let’s talk about our nine districts local California separate EPA but still kind of federal website with rules and regulations.
    {{lw.searchUI_title}}

Then San Francisco the lunatic liberal fascist Nazi overlords. in their own great wisdom decided to make even more strict rules I was searching for the website for you I actually visited and registered with them when I first open my business over 30 years ago they have their own particular rules of local government that are even more stringent.

I myself am a member of. MACS

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/macsworldwide.wordpress.com/2016/06/23/regulating-recharge/amp/

Which I fly across country to whatever state they’re holding their annual service training and industry products representation and expo of course I have possibly bumped into both of you gentlemen since you’re so knowledgeable.
https://www.macsw.org//web/MACS The both of you and I have probably sat in on the same instructional classes put on by the EPA as were listening to the new yearly rules and updates but maybe these have lapsed your mind and you forgot about what you have learned.

You were also probably attended the classes of the bureau of automotive repair while they were laying down the new rules and regulations I’m sorry I didn’t introduce myself to the both of you I hope to see you again there next year.

    Then there is the AHR
About the AHR Expo — AHR Expo

The biggest one is located back in Chicago this has the most industry standard training of the large commercial HVAC and residential equipment and components tools and testing procedures. Also for free when you attend you would go to the federal EPA classes to catch up on the yearly new rules laws and regulation. I’m sure both of you were there I just miss you. Of course both of you have the pathetic Automotive 609 on refrigerant requirement certification.
On top of that you probably obtained your 608 commercial refrigeration and residential air-conditioning plus small appliances universal license. This is a closed book test not like a automotive 25 questions open book.

You’re probably attended and also got your high-pressure refrigerant license at the same time

Let’s not forget flammable refrigerants R290 in R600 by the equipment manufacturers who required for you to even purchase or work on their equipment.

Then both of you probably also attend the 2 1/2 year course for refrigeration and heating and air-conditioning plus the 2 1/2 year course for the commercial side of the business plus building automation all going over the EPA rules and regulations in the below mentioned classes available at your local HVAC college

ECT Certificates / Degrees - Environmental Control Technology (HVACR) Environmental Control Technology (HVACR)

Plus the both of you spent your 2 1/2 years going through your automotive degree program that was probably hosted and paid for by Toyota factory plus General Motors factory with all the news equipment training procedures donated cars brand new with the latest software and hardware

Degrees and Certificates | Automotive Technology | Skyline College

Which also exclusive goes over all the rules laws and regulations for the EPA. The bureau the air quality control. And any other local Jurisdiction associated with the state you live in.

If so you would not be having this discussion right now insinuating and throwing words back-and-forth at each other. Both with just enough knowledge to be dangerous. ( not even know what you don’t even know)

I will see both or you in the next annual MACS Expo in the training and regulation classes.

And meet you at the AHR in Chicago coming up this next year.

Update: I have not taken it in go the mechanic or run any tests myself yet, but the airflow has returned to normal. That sound, though not gone, has greatly reduced. Air temp has dropped from 90° F to 70° F so that likely has some effect.

Perhaps I am not reading what all the problem you are having is......
The compressor could be bad, that would effect the temperature coming out of the vents.
Unlesssss.... the computer is getting info that the compressor speed is changing and it's
    adjusting the blower motor speed.
If you take it off "auto" and adjust the fan to a certain speed, does it still do the same thing?
And the sound in the video is what mine sounds like at times, but I can still get 20 degrees out the vent.

One thing I did notice though, several months ago I put on one of the dash covers. And my a/c was
not working very well. It worked, but it was very slow to cool. I was lucky it was too hot at the time.
Then I finally cut out the hole for the red plastic dome on the right side of the dash. No, don't remember
what it is. But when finally cut out a hole for it, my a/c worked good again. I "think" it is a sensor for
the a/c to tell the computer how much heat is coming in the car???
I just know that when the cover slides and blocks it, my a/c doesn't work, but when I uncover it, it works.
I just haven't not taken the time to look in the manual to see what it is. NOT important to me. :)

NO, I don't have any references to prove it.
NO, I don't have any documentation to prove it.
NO, I have not don't months of research to prove it.
That for ANYONE who is going to whine and cry about it. :) (y)

Do you have a dash cover? Or paper or anything that might be cover that red dome?
The compressor doesn't just fix itself. It could be a bad contact inside of it that could cause it to
    work on an off.

Sooner or later you'll have to take it to someone to give a correct diagnoses on what the problem is though.
I hope it's something simple for you.

No, I have nothing on the dashboard (I've always wondered what that red dome was). The compressor will still make that noise on auto or not. The only way to get rid of the noise is to turn the AC off. That could be AC and fan off or just AC off but fan still blowing. I do have an appointment scheduled tomorrow at the dealership. Nothing has "fixed" itself, it still makes that noise. But as the outdoor temp has dropped the AC hardly has to work so I believe the compressor is under less stress and therefore quieter.

If it was the fan making noise. Then even when the ac was turned off , when the engine coolant temp went up to turn on the fan you would hear the noise if it was the fan only.

The little plastic dome button in the corner driver side is the sun lode sensor. For the ac.

I guess I miss read/understood when your wrote: Air temp has dropped from 90° F to 70° F.
    Sorry....
Hopefully it's a good shop and they will give you an honest diagnoses...

Ah that's understandable. Outdoor ambient air temp dropped. Not the AC air temp. I'm taking it to the dealer, so I expect they know what they're doing. However they did tell me the Prius did not have a transaxle (I'm getting my transaxle fluid changed too, just for preventative maintenance), and that it had a transmission. I'm a but concerned about that as I was under the impression that most, if not all, front wheel drive vehicles had a transaxle, and all my research shows the Prius having a transaxle. I'm going to bring that up when I meet with them. Hopefully it was just the guy on the phone misunderstanding something. Really hoping this doesnt turn into one of those dealership horror stories.
