I usually avoid Facebook. I especially avoid any of the "quizzes, polls," etc., but a relative had posted the picture below and asked if anyone knew what it was -- of course, it was one of those "things" that are passed around the web, but surprised that pretty much no one knew what the photo depicted.

I remember bringing my future wife to tears one Saturday as I supervised her setting up the device. Hey's she is sensitive.

Always frustrated me that I would think I had it spot on, and then tightening the clamp screw would shift it.

One car I had, there was an oblong hole in the base with teeth along the side, and a dimple it the mounting plate below it. You wouldn't need it very loose to adjust, because you could stick your Phillips screwdriver through the toothy hole into the dimple and twist, and adjust it that way.

IIRC that was (or was functionally identical to) a standard feature of Robert Bosch distributors from the mid-60s onwards.

I could set the points in my very first car with the thick top lid of a soda can. Not perfect, but close enough to get me back to a set of gauges.

    What's your "point?" :ROFLMAO:

They were super easy to set on my old motorcycles once I discovered the trick of tuning an AM radio between stations.

I wouldn't say knowing what they are is a test of cognitive ability. Honor role school students today probably wouldn't recognize a slide rule.

None of the cars I've owned had points.
