Washed interior of the car. Went to kick on, all the indicator lights were on, lcd was not on, display was not on, ready not on, car wouldn't do anything. AC kicks on, brake lights would come one. Freaking out that after washing my precious car that needed it badly, I ended up killing it! I decided to start pulling stuff out of my rear end, and pressed the power button and held it while depressing the break, and having the shifter on neutral. Not sure WHAT got it to kick on but it did. It also would not go to the diagnostic screen previously, now it did and it showed DA NG, which i cleared but cannot find anywhere what the heck the NG stands for, the heading was red and it just said NG.

Please help a freaked out car noob who ashamedly knowsn nothing about cars, and is NOT ready to get another one.

1 - Was I in some sort of special mode where it wont kick on for a legitimate reason, like I pressed a thousand things accidentally while cleaning?!?
2 - Did I perhaps get liquid in a part that liquid does not belong (although I used flipping cleaning wipes). (The lcd not coming on, and flickering initially led me to believe it was a short of some sort :( )
3 - Am I effed? :(, It's good and going now, battery reads at 13.8, this puppy has only 113k and was hoping to take it to a higher limit.
4 - I've had other electrical snafoos in the past but long past and they've checked it since and nothing too recently.
5 - Again what is the DA code NG in red?

Thank you very much for your time and insight in helping this total noob that should have studied up on his car he's owned for the last 7 years.

Good questions deserve a better answer than this, but just to begin, did you run your battery down while cleaning the car with the doors open? That would do it, especially if it's your original 2014 battery.

What specifically were you cleaning, and how?

Cleaned the bejeezus out of upholstery, dash, every surface. Over known components (dash, center console) I used cleansing wipes and cannot envision moisture causing it from the wipes. However to clean the upholstery i used quite a bit of cleaner (still not excessive) and used a bissel upholstery cleaner which I've used before and visibly suctioned majority of the fluid and gunk. My giant fear was that I learned afterwards that the backseat is over the golden ticket hv battery, had a mini heart attack, but no moisture down there. But my heaviest connection to the cleaning was the glitchy nature of the dash and the lcd (ac/clock display) not coming on, as well as the main display, things flickering, and then eventually playing the game it did with ignition etc... Incredibly suspect that it happened after cleaning. When Pluggo mentioned running it down it made sense but I've never ran it without it being in full ready mode. It has been a hell of an OEM 12v, has lasted me since the beginning, and from what I see a lot of people have replaced them so much earlier but still suspect about the timing.

I had the car on full ignition while cleaning. Did it again this morning and I'm over at the dealership where I've always had it serviced. They suspect it is the 12V. Online everywhere I had seen the price of the 12V in the 200-300 range,, these guys want $488 installed. I have always used these guys and probably will oblige but jeeez, what's the HV battery going to cost here, $8000?

They had no idea what the NG code was either (at least not the concierge guy). I've uploaded it, just out of curiosity. It has not come back even after having done the bit with not going into ready mode multiple times so likely unrelated but curious regardless.

In a certain position to not yet upgrade, nor ready for a giant mechanic bill for the HV battery replacement, hoping that one lasts me a good while longer until I am financially at an ok place to upgrade. I love this dang car, even without the cool toys on board that came out right after I bought it. Just recently had a few rentals and drove to California and beyond, 3300 miles worth in a Chrysler Pacifica, and a Dodge Challenger for a guilty pleasure ride when I got back (plane), I swear it's the Prius' way of condemning me for liking the damn Challenger :p, but it knows I would not trade in that 45+mpg average I get on my baby, not anyway in heck!

NG is No Good, an unfavorable result of a self-test. DA may have been the DSP Amp (though I think on mine it would say DSP Amp, maybe we have different versions. Maybe just "Display Audio", if that's the system you have). I would try getting the car as dry as possible, open everything, run some fans, wait a while, clear errors, try again.

Yours is the second thread I've seen this month about an interior wash gone sideways. Must be something about the pandemic and too much spare time. This Toyota bulletin probably needs to be spread around as a public service announcement.

It works like magic when using that method to clean egr cooler, why not try it inside the dashboard?

That experiment was reported earlier this summer, results seemed not encouraging.

Does that mean that the problem went away ?
The actual battery NEVER gives out 13.8 volts. That is the charging system you are measuring.....when the car is "running".

Actually I think that is a very good answer.
Or at least a very good guess.

If that is what happened, a manual charging of the 12 V battery might get him by for a few days while he shops for a new one.

I agree Sam, Pluggo's answer is a very good answer indeed, because upon reading it again I remembered that yes while I had it on....its on ready mode, but it was a long time with it off with the doors open! So his answer likely was the true source of my despair, old battery finally heading to the graveyard!

HAAAAAAAAAAAA! The water on the bissel reservoir was rather brown, but alas it was a child's chocolate & soda mess.

Also turns out my hearing/listening abilities weren't functioning at the dealership, the $488 was including my due maintenance so they were fair with the battery. All is well and have not had any odd behaviors pop up although now paranoid about my HV battery and what life it has left! But fingers crossed that it lives just as much past the lifespan expected of the 12V as this 12V did!

Thank you all for your prompt responses, you folks are awesome, and again Pluggo, upon reading the message again, it clicked about the dang doors and light!

Not sure what you mean. Was the engine cycling on/off? If not, I suspect you drained your battery, due to protracted time with the car "on", but not "ready". "On" equates to position two of a conventional keyed car.

I meant that whenever I have the need for the car to be "on" it is on AND in ready mode, with the engine cycling, I have never thought it necessary to run it just on the battery. But as Pluggo stated and I did not consider initially, there was a large amount of time where the car was not on at all, but with all doors open and it was too much for the aging battery indeed.
