Do You "Floor" Your Accelerator Pedal Frequently?

Depends on what you mean by "often". I do so you much more often than you, but still only a handful of times per year when wanting to pass quickly and cleanly.

 

Once in a while, when I’m doing the speed limit and know the timing of the intersections’ yellow light and ICE is above 152F.

Sone fella floored his accelerator and got the check engine light for blown inverter and the recalled covered it!

 

I do it sometimes.

1- In our nearest city there is an interstate on-ramp where they placed a stop sign right at the very end of the merging lane. From that stop sign you have less than one car length to be merged and at the flow of traffic.

2- Sometimes in winter when there are levies of slush piled up between lanes and at intersections. I have found that when I need to push through one of those piles of slush, if I floor it before I hit the slush, I stand a better chance to pushing through the slush.

I shift to the PWR mode, in these situations. It gives me much better response from the vehicle.

 

Very rarely do I go press the throttle to the floor.

FWIW I think running an engine at maximum RPM every once in a while can be a good thing for overall care and maintenace...eg the Itailian Tuneup.

("Blow out" carbon from the muffler, faster movement of valve train, max oil pressure, hotter spark and combusion, and more. Maximizing all the engine components to keep them ready & tested) (Plus activating your ABS brakes is also a good thing to do every so often)

Mostly just on shorter offramps and other situations where I don't want to be the slow one merging into fast traffic. Really wish people would merge with the flow of traffic. Not coming in at 1000 mph or 5mph.

I'd rather ride my bicycle or drive my sienna if I want to go fast! The sienna is actually fairly quick at accelerating (let's not mention turning, Prius is way better at this). I recently sold my sports car since it has been dusty for several years since we've had kids.

 

I think that would be an "onramp".....offramp you might need to be braking. I agree people need to learn to merge with the flow of traffic, not just turn on their turn signal expect everyone to move over and let them in.

As to the question, I do not recall ever flooring mine.

Always stay below 3,000 RPM. This motor has a red line of 5,000 RPM. Excessive oil usage maybe from driving hard.

 

On too many of the hill climbs I travel, that would require putting on the emergency flashers and staying in the slow line of heavy trucks in the far right hill climbing lane.

And watching numerous lightly loaded trucks zoom by to the left.

And it would be a traffic hazard on other routes where there are not enough heavy slow trucks to provide protective cover.

 

Benefit of living in a flat area I guess.

 

I live near on-ramps to highways with very short but steep declines. If I don't have a car right in front of me and depending on the length of the decline, I'll come close to flooring the car on the steep downhill portion of the on-ramp. And then I'll ease up when I reach 65 mph.

 

The only time I floor it is when I'm trying to make the yellow light and don't want to slam on my brakes to stop before the intersection. The Prius is actually very good in this kind of situation despite being a "slow car". It gets from 45 mpg to 60 mph pretty quickly in order to beat the red light. The instant electric torque really helps and there's no gear hunting like an automatic transmission. A normal car with 200 horsepower would not be any faster from 45 to 60 mph than a Prius because when you floor it, it will try to accelerate in the highest gear, have slow acceleration, then downshift to the correct gear and have maximum acceleration. That wasted time from this will make it no faster and perhaps even slower than a Prius from 45 to 60 mph. Of course in a normal car you can be in manual mode in a lower gear at a higher rpm in the power band and accelerate from 45 to 60 mph much faster than a Prius. In reality almost no one drive in manual mode in lower gears to constantly stay in the power band.
That would kill your fuel economy and shorten the life of your engine.

 

Mine regularly sees large loads/power settings but very rarely does the throttle pedal get pinned to the floor.

 

Ive always floored my accelerator in all 4 of my Prii over the years. I do a lot of highway driving, so lots of on ramps, or moving around big trucks ect.

It isn’t good to always be flooring it, but it is good every once and a while! My Ford C-Max is actually pretty dang quick, doing 0-60 in under 8 seconds. I definitely do floor it pretty often just for fun. I never floored my Prius for fun

 

This was in my mind in terms of MPG and the health of the car. I mostly accelerate asap to my desired speed and then release the pedal a bit off to keep the speed or switch to cruise mode. Is this better than accelerating gently?

 

The whole concept of flooring it to beat a yellow light baffles me, from any perspective other than the impatience of having to wait a cycle. Are your yellow lights really that ridiculously short, violating Federal Highway Administration guidelines? 45 to 60 mph?

Last week I witnessed a near collision when the car in the adjacent lane floored it for the yellow light, while I stopped. Across the intersection, he had to slam on the brakes even harder to avoid rear ending the car in front of him.

 

Please let me ask, what's the average RPM when you guys during normal acceleration from 0-40. I do stop and go in Los Angeles street traffic and I experienced high acceleration to reach 40mph will reduce MPG. That's why I can get higher MPG on highway than local drive.
