Hello everyone, I browsed through the forums and could not find an answer in regards to Group 35 AGM battery being okay for 2nd gen prius. When i check the voltage on the battery on maintenace mode (2 power button clicks without turning the car fully on). It will read around 11.9 which is getting pretty low. I don't want to be stranded in middle of nowhere in Canadian winter. I checked the battery year and it is dated back to 2011, so I think its time for a new battery. I saw a group 35 AGM battery from costco. It is rated for 55AH " Energizer 35 AGM battery". specs are:

    Amp Hour: 55
Battery Type: Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM)
    BCI Group Number: 35
    Brand :Energizer
    Cold Cranking Amps :650 Amps
    Cranking Amps : 800 Amps
    Reserve Capacity: 100 Minute
    Voltage: 12 Volt

Is this battery too big where my charging system will have an issue charging it up fully while driving? I looked at my original battery and it is also rated for 55 Amp hours so I think that is okay.

    Thank you

No. If it will physically fit and the posts are right, it will be just fine.
Minor differences in capacity are meaningless.

yes, I know the posts will be SAE on the new battery and I will have to convert my prius cables. My brother is an automotive technician, so ill have him convert my positive and negative cables.

It's taller and wider than the specified Group 51 battery.

I'm probably going to go with Canadian Tire's offering next time. It's correct sized and spec'd. Just go to their site, go to batteries, enter your car stats. It'll show you the compatible battery. Specify your location and it'll show how many available at nearby stores.

Another option is SaskBattery: I got an Optima Yellow Top mail order through them last time, but prices have been climbing.

Local purchase through Canadian Tire is very easy, around $220 now I think.

Both batteries have proper post size (and vent), no need to modify cables.

Yeah, I saw the canadian tire offering. I refuse to buy any batteries from them anymore as their warranty is honestly one of the worst ever. You have to have a phyiscal copy of the receipt for them to warranty your battery. With costco, the AGM's have a 5 year free replacement warranty and another 3 years after the 5 year prorated, no receipt needed as it is on your costco membership card. Canadian tire I think also offers a 3 year warranty. the Costco battery was also going for 169.99 in store today. pretty huge savings+easy warranty claims in comparison to the minimal hassle converting JIS to SAE.

Oh i did not know the prius's battery is group 51. I think my brother can somehow fit it in there with a few modifications if needed. I will look for a group 51 AGM then, if i can't find a reasonably priced one then ill just get the group 35. thank you !

edit: Yeah, I just went on costco's website, they also offer the goup 51R AGM battery, but it only has 41 Ah. If i could fit the group 35, should I just go for it as it offers 55 Ah?

My prius has SKS and pretty positive the stock battery is the s46. I have seen some non sks prius's having the non sks battery (S34B20R) that has 36Ah

If you decide to use the regular post Group 51 battery, the negative cable and positive clamp from a similar year Camry Hybrid work perfectly. Direct fit, no chopping/modifying required for a Gen 2 Prius.
