I am getting the "Engine Maintenance Required" pop-up message. Is this a sign a problem has been detected, just a nag to go pay Toyota for a check up. I have about 42K on it, and just had my last check up in April. Is every six months a reasonable interval to for regular check-ups? It seems like a its a short time.

It means you've driven 5,000 miles since the light was last reset. See your Warranty and Maintenance guide to find out what maintenance is due.

    40,000 is pretty basic.

45,000 has more stuff to check and it's about where I am.

AND 5000 miles is the interval recommended for tire rotation. No other service is due at that time.
I usually just stare at that light for about 2000 more miles and then get all of the service done at the same time (oil change mostly).

It's a nag for scheduled maintenance. Nothing more than a 5000 mile countdown clock.
It will come on, and then eventually turn during the trip when it hits 500 miles before.

Be sure to look at the Warranty and Maintenance Guide to see what is due at each of those 5,000 mile intervals. You'll notice that it describes several different categories of driving conditions. You're on the honor system to decide which category your driving falls in. My category, for example, has oil and filter changes due every 5,000.

The maintenance warning is strictly on miles driven since the last reset. If you go with 6mo/5k whichever comes first schedule Toyota recommends, sometimes warning can come very quickly, if you drive a lot.

With COVID-19 restriction, I am driving very little, my first service was due last month for the 6mo check-up, but ODO is reading only 1900miles. I will not see the maintenance warning for at least another 8 mo at this rate.
