Ok thanks...well if you have a similar setup to the one seen in the video posted by TheChip on page 9 I'd welcome any more detailed info you might be willing to share too. (how you mounted it to the dash, how it interfaces with the car, and the launcher software you used)

did a search and found this. Introducing the Lilium Jet - Lilium Thought those posting to this thread might be interested. I was scratching my head a bit while watching

It may have already been posted in Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel New
I read a few posts referencing a lithium powered flying machine, but the ones I read were negative responses so I didn't read any further in that thread or even look at the OP.

Sorry for the late reply. I'm using a 12.8 inch Android head unit, there are a few different models available online if you search for large double din android units. Mounting is the same as any other android headunit, just pop it in and you're all set. The OBD2 interface is through USB, the cable is routed through the dash to the back of the unit so it's always connected. The downside is you lose some visibility on the HVAC LCD in most orientations. This model can be landscape or portrait mode.

It's not, see above. An android tablet will have issues connecting to the steering wheel controls, which is why I opted for a double din android setup, although there may be solutions out there I haven't found.

Thanks for the reply. Ah, of course, forgot those head units existed. They're a neat solution and, among others, an elegant way to solve the screen-mounting question. A smartphone or tablet with audio fed into the stock stereo has some merits too, I think. Ideally I'd like to find a fuss-free way to remote control my smartphone with a larger, dash-mounted touchscreen. (...but TeamViewer, VNC etc...seem a bit cumbersome for that purpose)

Very excited that this project is still going and has reached the final stages, keen to see some more data from the test models!

Probably similar failure rate to the NiMH in that time period. Lithium's memory effect doesn't help. All the other benefits of Lithium outweigh longevity weaknesses.

I have modified the ECU and even replaced it with custom hardware. The protocols are very simple. The 100A+ happens extremely often in my vehicle. I drive with a lead foot, live on a mountain, and drive the Prius at speed through the Rocky Mountains. Merging onto the interstate from nothing to 80mph+ requires pedal to the metal. This is not a rare occurrence for a wild Prius in North America. And it is not a once a drive occurrence either.

In Teslas and other fully EVs they seem to expect the Li batteries to last the life of the vehicle. If not, the vehicle owners will be in for quite a shock (not literally) because those high capacity batteries would be very expensive to replace.

Vehicle life is usually less than a decade for traditional auto makers. Only Tesla has put longevity over profits so far. They release data for pack capacity over miles driven and I'd expect those to work a very long time.

But if you take a Leaf as an example that had no active BMS, uses cheap nice person cells, and doesn't limit charge/discharge profiles, you'll see a huge number of in warranty failures, and even more outside of warranty failures. These are vehicles with 60k miles on them and less than a decade old.

I have a Leaf. It is crap. But it works just fine to putz around town. In an EV "death" is measured when the capacity is still rather high. In a HEV, or even a PHEV, you can get down to almost no capacity left and the car still functions.

As an example the Nissan Leaf warranty considered a battery defective or dead at 9-bars which starts at 72.5% capacity. So if you've dropped from 100% to 72.5% capacity, your EV is "dead" according to longevity statistics.

Compare this to the Prius where you can drive with nearly 10% capacity remaining and barely notice a difference.

Chip, thanks for sharing. I did a quick Google search and found a unit (13.3" ANDROID 10.0 UNIVERSAL DOUBLE DIN NAVIGATION RADIO WITH MOTORIZED ROTATABLE SCREEN) on Phoenix Automotive. Can you direct us poor souls who have no idea how to gauge which unit fits in the Gen 3's, possibly to a specific unit, I would be eternally grateful.

Crutchsfield is a good place to check which radios will fit your car and any extra parts you'll need.

This seems to be the new version from the seller I bought from:

    46B24R 12V 20Ah 40Ah 46Ah Smart BMS Control Lithium Phosphate Battery LiFePO4 | eBay

46 Ah version which has backup power.

This is a listing I found in the last couple of/few months, cheapest listing with backup power. It notes you can opt for the correct 46B24R version vs 46B24L. No experience with this seller.

DOHON 12 Volt 46B24L 850CCA Lithium Phosphate Battery LiFePO4 For Auto Boat | eBay

There could be cheaper options but don't have time to search right now, sorry...
