So the volunteer doesn't know what he/she is getting, I wonder if the placebo has an irritant to cause pain at the site, like a real vaccine normally does.

I agree, injected placebos ought to sting a bit. Just a pinch of potassium chloride? Not going to suggest bleach, my 10 foot pole broke.

Volunteers never know, nor do the shooters.

Medical staff with app to read barcodes or QR codes could probably cheat. But then the hippo of the Hippocratic oath would come and stomp on them.

But if there is no pain within a day or two, can you assume you got the placebo?

I'm not so sure. MUCH of what is happening right now tends to refute that theory.

Someone at CNN doesn't understand different temperature scales:

"Moderna's vaccine can be kept at minus 20 degrees Celsius, which is about minus 68 agrees Fahrenheit."

That is a giant disconnect. Does anyone have a better temperature claim?

    ==============
OK, one item updated, while another has not:

"CORRECTION: A previous version of this post misstated the temperature the Moderna vaccine can be kept. It's minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit."

Hoarding here seems to be have been creeping up last week, then shot up yesterday right after our governor's press conference tightening restrictions:

"In announcing new statewide restrictions aimed at reducing the spike in COVID-19 cases, Gov. Jay Inslee on Sunday urged people not to hoard “supplies.”

“Buying up everything really hurts everybody,” Inslee said, “and there’s no necessity of it right now.”

But while the man didn’t specifically call out toilet paper, the toilet paper sure did call to shoppers.

At some Seattle stores on Sunday, in a throwback to earlier days of the pandemic, people were already buying up stacks of bathroom tissue, which seems to turn to spun gold when things look grim.

Costco ran out of the stuff over the weekend, ..."

Toilet paper shelves again left bare, as grocery store shoppers worry about Washington restrictions | The Seattle Times

Did March's hoarders already run low, and then not think to keep their stashes reasonably well stocked when retail supplies recovered?

Discover mag asserts different conditions for these two mRNA vaccines:

Keeping Coronavirus Vaccines at Subzero Temperatures During Distribution Will Be Hard, But Likely Key to Ending Pandemic | Discover Magazine

It is not clear to me whether Moderna adds something to improve stability above -80 oC. For plain old scientists collecting RNA in the field (and lacking ultracold storage), there are things one can add. Those may or may not be appropriate for human injection.

Possibly Nagurney, author of Discover mag article, could explain.

Nevermind the headline, the story indicates that yesterday's local hoarding run seems to have tapered off today, with shorter lines and stores well restocked overnight:
Rise in panic buying at local stores as Washington tightens COVID-19 restrictions | KOMO

That may suggest that most of March's hoarders didn't let their home stashes run low this time.

same here. our local supermarket delivery is beginning to be swamped with orders as people get more nervous about venturing out.
lines for free covid tests are overwhelming faciliries, and police are making people go home.

it is an amazing phenomena to watch, as the virus spreads, and all authoroty of every stripe is at a loss as to what to do, and people are too dumb to protect themselves.

    Thank you for the info.

As someone who has fully recovered from COVID-19 (infected in August), I'm not sure if I will need to be vaccinated whenever the vaccine becomes available. Anyone seen any info on this specific scenario?
