Questions about 4th gen Prius

    Thanks guys for your responses. Tideland Prius, you sound like maybe you live in the cold prairies like me. We will indeed see temps going to - 35 or -40C this winter, probably in January. I read that not much below freezing, the active grill shutters stay fixed at part open /part closed for most of the driving so they don't freeze. So much for a quick warm up.
    I have found that when it is colder, say - 10C or more, the motor keeps running when stopped, (till it warms up ) but the little animated car on the eco display tells me the motor shuts off! When the car is warm, all is as normal. Weird!
    I also find at -10 or -15 C it can take quite a while for the motor to warm up. Here in Saskatoon, I often find myself arriving at my destination either before or just at the time the motor is warm enough to shut off at a light. Guess I'll have to plug in more than I used to with my old 03Vibe (which I did at -20 C or colder).
    Mendel Leisk, I bought the car used here in SK so it had a block heater already. But I did enjoy your older tire and wheel discussions re winter tires/rims and found some very nice 08 or 09 Corolla rims and mounted winter tires on those. (they had a 45mm offset rather than the stock wheels, but otherwise they fit perfectly). I used your plumbing caps idea but found orange ones that I painted black and siliconed on to the rims. I also made some very nice aluminum wheel centers for my stock alloys which I would like to share pics of if I could figure out how to do that . (0 cost)

    That probably means the engine is running but not charging the battery (maybe the battery is cold or is near or above the threshold for charging at those temps. It can happen).

    Yes I use an EBH to help reduce the mpg hit.

    I’ve heard about the active grille shutter and not closing completely below 5°C or something like that to prevent freezing. At least it’s mostly closed, I suppose.

    I suspect you've got the cabin heater on - and the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) will keep running to keep you warm. Even works here when it's 20°C and the Climate Control is set at 25.5°C.

    Regarding the attachment, I wonder if the "~" should be ">". Also, the partially-open condition below 5C is a little frustrating. It'd be nice if they could lower the 5C on next gen.

    You mean this part?
    It looks to me like those are em dashes. It might be clearer is it simply said, "< 5C (41F)" to be consistent with the rest of the document. With no dashes.

    It was still good enough that I saved it in my Gen 4 tech info folder.

    Yeah I'm not thinking editorially just want to understand. It is an interesting doc, will salt it away for sure. The main thought I have: +5C seems frustratingly high. :(

    As @Tideland Prius says, maybe partially open grills are still somewhat effective?

    Unfortunately, editing and proofreading are significant parts of my job. Sometimes that skill can get in the way of enjoying a good story that needs a good editor. :oops:

    I was thinking something like that, too.

    Yes - my "job" at the moment, in retirement, besides being Organist for 2 Church services every week is to video, edit, add words etc. In a previous life, I had to do a deal of editing documents to go to Parliamentarians - so it has to be "right".

    So - I edit Church Services - proof "watch" them a couple of times previous - THEN when I get to see it on YouTube the next Sunday, I can't help but do a Spell-Check in my mind as I watch the hymn or scripture words scroll on the screen. In 10 months - I've found 2 minor errors, and one patch which hadn't gone quite to plan. Oh, well, too late.

    I currently have a 2007 Prius with 263000 miles. But I’m looking at a 2018 with 20,000 miles. I’ve been reading these forums to see if the 2018 waste as much oil as the 2007. I’m getting tired of adding half a quart per week.

    I haven't heard of any Gen 4 using any oil. It's 2 generations better than a 2007 - and 20,000m is a lot less than 263k.

    @Billy56 posted yesterday about having done 100k miles on a Gen 4 - maybe ask him?

    I've never heard of a Gen 4 oil burner yet. The most likely cause of it is the extended oil change intervals car makers are now recommending. I always change the oil at well under 10k miles (usually 5,000-7,500) and have never had an oil burner. The video on this thread explains.
