Is buying used 2017 Prius prime with 153,000 km (95,000 miles) worth it. The price is 16,000 CAD in Montreal. But
Can prime survive 300,000 km (190,000 miles) like the old Toyota vehicles are known for ?
my daily commute is 50 km (30 miles) & I do Uber/Lyft once a week.

    Please advise, thanks folks.

For reference, $35K (CDN) is the rough price for new? Are there any rebates currently?

we probably don't have enough history yet, but i would say yes, 200k miles should not be an issue on average.

Side note: did uber/lyft drop the 5 seat requirement?

It is very possible that a Prime with 95,000 miles on it has only 30,000 or 50,000 miles on the engine.

Excellent point but this particular vehicle possibly averaged nearly 25k/yr (aka a commuter). That would mean a heck of a lot charging to bump up the total EV miles and would move it into the "skip" category for me. OTOH, I wouldn't want one with little to no charging either.

Easy enough to find out. Just cycle the ODO button to show the total miles. Then scroll down the MID display to find the screen that shows the EV percentage. On the Prime, that percentage is any time the ICE is off regardless of the mode selected by the driver.

Thanks for the advice. Should I buy the extended warranty, it would cost extra 2,000 CAD
& what if the most driven miles are not on EV. Is it still worth it?

Did anyone faced issues on battery when miles go this high ?

Extended warranties are like lotteries. They are generally priced so that the company selling the warranty makes money from the process. I avoid lotteries and extended warranties like the plague. But if the warranty covers everything and gives you peace of mind, maybe it's worth it to you. Remember that new Toyota hybrids in the US have a 150,000 mile, 10-year warranty on them. I'm not sure about Canada but since it's the same system as in the '17 Prime, that should tell you how confident Toyota is in the system. Still, that doesn't mean it can't have an expensive failure. Also, the hybrid system is not the only expensive system on a Prius.

So far, I only have about 45,000 miles on my '17 Prime. It's still like new as far as battery performance. I got it with 23,000 miles on it and judging by the ECO History the original owner never plugged it in. When I traded in my '13 PiP in early 2019 it had 85,000 miles and that battery was also still performing like new.

Is this info retained if 12 volt battery has been disconnected? Maybe, just wondering...

Yes, from 35k-40k depending on trim levels
    & rebate is 2,500$ only
But for Honda Clarity it's 5k$.
But I would never go for new car, can't afford that.

Too bad the clarity isn't a hatch. Plus it's exterior is a bit ugh.

But it's EV range is 70km, apple/Android car play. 5 seats instead of 4 in prime. In Quebec the rebate is 8k$ & in Ontario it's 5k$.
I don't know why Toyota included 2 back seats in prime instead of 3 until 2019 model.

I'm pretty sure it is retained although I haven't personally disconnected the 12V myself yet. Either way, data is there and it certainly doesn't look like it got driven in EV for any appreciable distance.

That is not the oldest record, but it's one of the worst. Here's the very oldest record. That April, 2017 81.1 reading is the only month that looks like it saw any wall charge.
    2017_04-07.jpg

I've only had one month since I owned it that wasn't pegged at 199.9 mpg and that was last year when we took that 6,000 mile road trip. So far this tank, I'm reading 3/4 tank remaining after driving 1,937 miles. Since buying the car and resetting the trip computer, I'm at 73% EV and on this tank I'm at 93% EV.

I'm consuming comparable amounts of gas, but just by driving around 4K kms yearly lol. I "fill up" maybe every 6 weeks, but less than half a tank, typ around 18 litres.

I drive 20-40 miles a day typically. Usually in the car 5-6 days a week.

This may or may not be of help, however, it is the best machine that I have found for traveling longer distances! It is quite and has great mileage!

Traded in my 2018 Rav 4 hybrid for the 2017 Prime premium 30k. It was fortunately an eastern US southern garaged car.
I researched mine, for about six months. One line of thinking to be aware of, is whether or not it has been in salt on the roads/ gummed up in the panels (there are at least 5) underneath. I would check that.

Maintenance with throttlebody is quite important as well as, whether or not the drive e cat ( not a transmission) fluid was changed.

Great sub hatchback vehicle! - the 100lb puppy fits as well!

I called uber customer service & they said 4 doors with 4 seat belts is the requirement.
I made sure about prius back 2 seats instead of 3, & uber customer service said it's not an issue for Toronto. So I guess prime is eligible here

So is it better or worse if the car was driven mostly on EV ?
Better = less miles on Hybrid engine
Worse = EV battery being used alot

Just confused which one is it!

Welcome to the club. :D That's really a tossup because, if the battery fails, it won't matter how few miles the engine has on it. It's going to cost big bucks. But I would guess that battery has as much or more life left in it than my 45,000 mile Florida battery. And mine still takes as many kWh to charge as a new one.

The battery gets used any time the car is driven whether it's plugged in or not. What they don't like is getting run down to nothing or charged to full and Toyota doesn't let that happen in their hybrids.

The battery also doesn't like getting hot. And time will also eventually kill it. I doubt that heat is a real problem in Toronto and the battery is only four years old.

In my opinion, your main concern is the mechanical wear and tear of a 150,000 km car. And, on a Toyota, that's not much. Our first three Prii (Gen 2)came with that mileage* or more. We are on We're on #5 & 6 now. The car in question is nearly due for new spark plugs but that's way easier on this generation than previous ones. And the water pump and/or inverter coolant pump might be nearing their end of life. Also getting close to time to replace engine coolant. The drivers seat upholstery has been well occupied and might have some wear on it along with the steering wheel surface.

If the price was right and it had on-time oil changes, I wouldn't be afraid of it at all.

*PS. How do you say "mileage" in Canada? Is it "kilometerage?" :)
