Direct4 for hybrids looks like the eAWD currently available in Prius, Rav4 Hybrid and Venza with more powerful and possibly driver adjustable power of rear motor. Not that amazing. I'm more interested in their solid state batteries but "first half of the 2020's" could be 4+ years away. Meanwhile not a hint about possible gen 5 Prius.

With Japan's recent announcement for phasing out straight ICEs for electricfied cars not mentioning fuel cells, Toyota might be seeing the writing on the wall.
Sounds like it also applies torque vectoring to the different sides through the brakes.

Why is Hydrogen always considered being phased out. Toyota has spent 30 plus years in development as well as Honda. Japan is building a strong hydrogen infrastructure and several European countries are as well. Southeast Asia - Korea and China are working on this development as well. It is here and will be adopted by many. EV and Hydrogen will coexist.

that flies in the face of their stated philosophy. Remember? Toyota has said it's better for them to make a thousand times more hybrids than a few hundred electric cars because they only have so many (contracted) batteries to go around. That's because toyota never bothered to get long-term contracts for the necessary massive supply volume of batteries to build massive amounts of traction packs needed to ramp up large amounts of EV's. That leaves them at the very back of the line for contracts from the various manufacturers, unless Toyota follows Tesla wisdom by building battery factories themselves. That might be faster, but either path? It's going to take a long long time before anything happens.

So what are they announcing for the future that Tesla doesn't offer today (besides a dealer network that will become financially challenged as a higher % of EVs are sold and not serviced)?

Its about 3 years to ramp up battery production. Its probably even faster to by lithium iron phosphate from tesla/CATL in China, as they look like they can ramp fast without pesky permitting and labor regulations. But my guess is Toyota wants to ramp more expensive solid state batteries which probably means 7 years for r&d and production to get to be cost competitive.

That was before Japan announced shifting to electrified cars, and a ban on straight ICE ones.

Until there is a demand problem......

I suspect the comment is for the world market (lots of untapped potential still) while the cash cow US market has slowed. How much? IDK as Tesla no longer releases sales numbers but I suspect the early adopter/affluent/fan base customer in the USA is showing signs of weakening and eventually the tough part begins: selling to average Joes.

It's similar to the old business model of selling encyclopedias and vacuum cleaners: the first ones are sold to family and friends means lots of easy, quick sells but after that you have to go knocking on doors..... One way around this is to make a totally new widget (cybertruck) and sell those to a new (or same) crop of early adopter/fans.

Tesla has made no changes to the release of their sales numbers. They still report sales just as they always have.
Production and sales are both still growing YoY by healthy margins, as is reported in each quarterly report.

Tesla reports sales by quarter since the beginning. Any monthly numbers you have seen were from other sources, or just best guesses. With GM going to releasing sales numbers by quarter(and I think Ford did too), publications that once provided a monthly Tesla figures decided to stop the effort.

So, when Toyota finally comes out with their EV, will they go with CHAdeMO or CCS?

They already used CHAdeMO in Japan, but it doesn't cost anything to run a different style plug for fast charging, presuming that it even will fast charge.

Does Toyota have a financial stake in the CHAdeMO company?

I'll send a note to the local Toyota dealer and ask about it.

our local Toyota dealership j1772 spot is always occupied by employees & their ICEmobiles. Even the ChaDEMO spot (when they even work) is blocked at the Nissan shops.
