Steering wheel suddenly not 100% straight?

2020 Prime here. Just over 15k miles. Never hit a curb or anything of the sort. However, a car in front of me did slam on their brakes on the highway and I slammed on mine and I believe the brake assist kicked in. Since then, I’ve noticed the steering wheel is not 100 percent straight when going straight ahead. Pic:

YES, I am going totally straight here. Notice the top of the center of the steering wheel compared to the plastic trim an inch ahead of it. You can see the wheel is *SLIGHTLY* to the right.

Again, I only noticed this after I had to really slam on the brakes on the highway. No curbing wheels or not seeing a speed bump etc.

So my question is: has anyone heard of something like this? I am going to mention this to the dealer when I take it in for its 15k maintenance next week and see if they can center it. Since there no damage anywhere on the vehicle, I’d imagine they would do it for free, but that’s why I’m making this post. Don’t know if braking so hard threw off the alignment. Oh and I have the OEM wheels and tires and no suspension mods. 100% stock besides LEDs

I have the same problem on my 2017. However, mine changes. Sometimes it's off, sometimes it's straight. A wheel alignment at the dealer didn't fix it, however, if your's is in the same position all the time, I would recommend a wheel alignment and make sure you tell them to straighten the steering wheel.

Also, check to see that your tires are at the correct pressure. One of your tires could be low. Does the car pull to the left?

Wow that’s crazy. I never heard of a car doing that randomly itself. Ever notice what causes it to change? Or does it seem random

Just checked my tires via the Toyota connect app under the “My Garage”’ section on my iPhone - here’s a screen shot (they are cold car has been sitting for hours):

Also it’s 40 F outside if that matters.

I can't correlate it with anything.

Mine was absolutely right after a guy slammed on the brakes in front of me at like 45mph, it seemed like it happened then. But maybe I just noticed. It’s quite bizarre.

Do you have a 2020 Limited? I don’t see this option on the Toyota app for my 2021 XLE. Just ChargeMgmt and Remote Climate (remote AC/Heat and Front/Rear defrost). The Charger Map is a bit cumbersome compared to the PlugShare app.

I have a 2020 LE. Just click “My Garage” and scroll down under “Maintenance” and click Tire Pressure. (Assuming we have the same app here) - here are pics I uploaded for ya circled:

Do you have the same app as I?

And also, now that you mention it, on MY side, I do have the crappy charge station locator map, but I don’t, or haven’t found anything mentioning Charge Management or Climate Management? Where is that on the app?

No PSI. Some features seems to be MY and Trim specific although only a year apart.

Centering the wheel is easy, but everything involved is mechanically tied together. There may be a part that has come loose (never correctly tightened at the factory), or you hit a pothole, or something else is wrong. The off-center steering wheel shows that something under the front end has changed. Ask the dealer to find what changed, fix it, and tell you all the details. If something is bent, you don't want the wheel centered until the bent part is replaced.

Going off center after braking is weird. Right now, if you're driving straight on a level road, does the car continue straight, or does it drift to one side? Let us know what they find.

So I took the car into the dealer for what i thought would be a free check up but they ended up charging me $79.95 for an Alignment which they said was all it needed. Even tho I got it in February, and all alignments are free for 1 year, I had exceeded the 12k miles. The $79.95 alignment did solve the issue but they charged me, but knocked off 20$ off the price when I asked. It drives straight now and the wheel is centered. Also had the oil changed and tires rotated for free.

BTW the tech also told me he’s never had a Prime come in, less than a year old, that needed an alignment. I asked about the hard braking thing, he said that was unlikely, and insisted I must have hit a massive pothole or curb but he said he saw no damage anywhere. I’ve hit a few potholes in the last year but none severe enough to cause that, IMO. No curbs. Weird.

Wow. Your app looks a lot more useful than mine. Are we sure it’s the same one? It’s odd mine wouldn’t have what you have but I have the tire pressure

What is the actual name of this app? There are a number of Toyota apps in the Apple app store. The only one I have installed is Entune. What Prime models can use these features like tire pressure? I have a 2017 base model.

Yep not bad. I was under the 1 year warranty but over the mileage. They also did the other 15k mile service stuff w/ the fluid and crap.

They wanted $152 to replace the one rear exhaust heat shield (kind of sits under the rear passenger seat area) - claimed they couldn’t bend the current one to fit. New one was $144 plus 4 or 5 of those little plastic retainers which were a couple bucks a piece. I declined; when it’s warm out again I’ll get new clips and get the original one to fit myself (no idea how it fell off in the first place but it was hanging by 1 clip and basically touching the ground so I just ripped it off). They claimed they couldn’t get it to bend. It bends if you look at it wrong. It’s as thick as like 4 pieces or aluminum foil and bends easily. Lol

I had the same thing happened to me about a week ago. I had the right of way and the person merging onto the lane had yield/stop, they slowed down then accelerated onto the lane, which caused me to slammed the brakes. I was traveling around 30-35mph before coming close to a full stop. Then a day or two later, I am experiencing the same thing as you where the steering wheel feels a little tilted to the right. I noticed that sometimes, the steering feels straight. It seems to come and go. After you got the wheels aligned from Toyota, does it feel like factory alignment? I asked because everytime I get an alignment on a car, the steering wheel never feels straight as if it came of the factory. Got my car in Nov and only has 1300 miles. I didn't even realize that the Toyota app reads the PSI. Good to know. Also did you get 6 months of Verizon wifi? They sent me a link to activate it, but the link doesn't work.

It does feel pretty much how it felt when I got the car new. Sort of glad to hear it happened to someone else and I’m not going crazy. I’ve never needed an alignment for hard braking. It’s so bizarre n
