Is this normal?

    i don't define it, toyota does. i'm comfortable with anyone over maintaining, but i don't believe it is causing the o/p's problem

    So then it would be normal for the wheels to spin at the same rate in drive with the wheels off the ground?

    I don't know, I've never tried it. It allows the traction control to achieve the same effect as a limited-slip diff, in operating conditions in slippery stuff on the ground.

    When off the ground, the traction control is going to be noticing not only that the two drive wheels might be at different speeds, but that the other two aren't turning at all. How it reacts to that nothing-like-normal situation isn't anything I've ever checked.

    Come to think of it, I think I was in a service bay once with a mechanic who wasn't very familiar with Prius, who drove a Gen 2 onto a lift and applied the parking brake, but didn't realize it was still in D. As the lift went up, the front wheels naturally started to spin, and I think the first thing we noticed was the sound of the traction control working the brake on one side to keep the speeds matched.

    I'm thinking It's the battery pack also. I'm assuming that this is the current mileages at similar ambient temperatures? Prius gas mileage does go down in cold weather.

    @TMR-JWAP might have an opinion.

    Took it to the dealer, ran a health check and no codes found. They also “checked the brakes” and didn’t find an issue even after I told them I just changed the pads,rotors and lubed the pins. I showed them the video of one wheel spinning and he said it’s normal.

    Another thought is would air in the brake line cause excess drag in the brakes?

    So the 07 has a new traction battery and the 09 has the original battery? Can you swap the traction batteries yourself? That is the most likely source.

    Resistance between 21 and 23 mΩ across the board? Doesn't look bad to me ....

    Looks good to me, if you do swap the batteries and still have a problem at least you can rule that factor out.

    Do both cars have the same brand tires? Are you getting the different mileages in the same temperature conditions?

    I’m befuddled that the battery isnt helping the ice in any condition. Yes same exact tire Goodyear fuel max 185/65-15 aired to 45psi.

    Battery swap is going to be hard as the 07 lives at the Newark airport as a Turo rental. I’m taking it back to the dealer tomorrow for them to investigate. I don’t have a windows laptop or I would run the techstream software with the cable I have to pull logs.

    Never heard of Turo before. Looks interesting if you have an extra car. How's your experience with it?

    It’s ok. I make around 110-120 a month with it but I only charge 15-20.00 a day to use it. A lot of cars are newer but I target younger adults who aren’t here for business and just need to get around quick.

    You can have someone watch Dr Prius while you drive to monitor what is going on. (an Android phone can log data on DrPrius but you need to be able to view the file on some form of MS Office). Or you can try Hybrid Assistant, which makes some very nice reports and graphs on the phone (at least on Android).

    You want to see what the amps are going into and out of the battery before you can say that "the car is accelerating on the ICE only with no help fom the battery pack". If you are discharging the battery at more than 10 amps, then it is going to MG2 to accelerate the car.

    Normally on my 2006 it will discharge the battery at 100 to over 150 amps peak on a flat-to-the-floor accel from a stop. Then on a heavy decel the battery will charge up to 80 amps.

    I was thinking about this driving the other day. When I was taking this off the trailer when I got home and it didn’t run, we had to drag it off the trailer. I remember one wheel popping and moving when it was sliding while the other didn’t budge. Could I have messed up something in the trans magnetwise to cause poor mpgs and the screen showing it not really doing anything but charging? That would explain why everything is showing as working properly when it’s clear that it isn’t. I also had a dealer check the hv battery and confirmed it’s in great condition.

    Im late but just stuff to add.

    Its 100% normal for only one tire to spin when both are jacked up. even more cmmon with front wheel drive cars since one cv joint is shorter and one tire gets power a little faster than the other. I you were to lock the tire spinning or let it touch the ground then power would go to the other tire and it would spin. The downside of cars is power goes to the tire with the least traction.

    Thats how traction control works, the abs sensor detects a tire is spinning faster than the others and applys brakes to that tire forcing the power to go to other tires. This works so you can drive in a circle and the outside tires can spin faster then the tires on the inside without chirping the tires.

    As for the battery, the screen shows when the electric engine is helping. Its pretty noticable when its not helping. after driving and the battery is full slow to a crawl and the engine should turn itself off ( turn off all music so its quiet) you should be able to creep around under 15 on electric only.

    length of the cv joint has nothing to with it when its rotating.

    Now now, a little technobabble can be entertaining at the end of a day.

    That one even has a tiny grain of nerdy truth: the torque really can't propagate down the axle shaft any faster than c, so if you call the right shaft 30 cm longer than the left, the torque really does get to the right wheel at least a billionth of a second later than to the left. A little more than that, as the propagation rate in steel has to be somewhat slower than light in vacuum.

    Is that why one tire spins and one not? Course not, but why spoil the fun?

    That part is something the traction control does, yes.

    That part is simply what the differential is for. A plain differential is all you need to drive in circles without tire chirping, but it does have the mentioned problem of being limited to the torque at the wheel with least traction.

    Traction control is added to it to solve that latter problem (among other things).

    Noticed over the past few days that my resistance hasn’t been reporting according to Dr Prius. See below. I’m debating replacing the HV ecu and battery ecu since the car is just constantly charging and never discharges below 61%. I have yet to see over 40 mpg no matter how much I baby it.
