Need to replace sun visor...

    My car is a 2013 Prius C. Earlier today I was struggling to move the sunvisor, and I was a little too aggressive with it, and it actually broke off. You can imagine how I felt.

    wanted to check in with this group about how easy this is to replace, I suspect it is not that hard, the mounting for the visor has two screws that are easy to remove. I contacted my nearby Toyota dealership just to get a temperature on this, and they told me the part itself would be $175 and with the labor it would be 255. Pretty shocking. I would be extremely surprised if there were not a considerably cheaper option.

    i’ve looked around a little online and the prices for this part seem to be around $50.

    Contact a recycler. You can probably buy a used one out of a crashed car for $15 locally by this afternoon.

    Thank you very much, but what do you mean a recycler? Should I just Google “local auto parts recycler”?

    yep- other search terms would be auto salvage, junkyard, used auto parts.

    car-part.com is a database that might help you find a recycler with the item you want on hand. They have no inventory themselves, they just try to match buyers to sellers.

    The labor number might include painting it to match your interior.

    Well I have looked like hell on the sites you mentioned, and while this part seems to exist in a number of places vaguely close to the Chicago area, many/most are so far away that it wouldn't really be worth my time, and I think I'll just order the part online. The most I'll pay is $50.

    But to my original question - is this a straightforward and easy replacement?

    Probably. Every one I've seen has been.
    Take the mounting screws out and SEE for yourself.
    You can't hardly make it any worse.

    The question that maybe you should be asking is:
    Can the actual visor be removed from it's mounting rod and put onto the new rod ?
    This would be useful if the new one is a different color or style.

    The mounting rod snapped off in the holder, like a broken off key in a keyhole. Once I unscrew it I imagine I will be able to remove that part without difficulty.

    If you can remove the portion that is in the roof area, I would try a JB Weld route. It can be done, and it can be done so it looks clean.

    When done properly, its the best for a "permanent" seal. I've use it to repair a crack in an exhaust manifold, a leaking water pump and to fix broken plastics. If you can, it will only take a very small amount to apply. Let it dry overnight, and it will be locked in place.

    If you glue the thing, do it off the car! You don't want to accidentally glue the thing into the car. Let it set out on a tabletop if you repair it that way. I think you were already on the right track mail-ordering a used one.

    At first I thought you were in L.A., where that's a very popular car and the auto recyclers are all over town. Now knowing you're in Illinois? Yeah, order in.

    I haven't changed one on a c, but on the vast majority of recent autos it's 1 or 2 screws, a half-twist and pop it's out. Reverse to install. They make them such that the installer at the factory can do it in 4 seconds.

    Yours sounds like it broke the most common way, so you should anticipate a simple replacement. Toyota builds their stuff that way.
