Foxwell Scan Tool on Prius Prime

I initially posted a question on one the existing threads, but one of the moderators suggested starting a new thread. A quick site search revealed very few hits for the Foxwell scanners. Perhaps this thread can become what folk’s experiences have been with the Foxwell scan tools and the Prius Prime.

    My original question was:
Can the Foxwell NT520 Pro scan tool be used to change the constant beeping to a single beep when the shift lever is in reverse?

Last night I verified my NT520 has the latest Toyota firmware package. This morning, when I connected it to the OBD2 port it would not auto-detect the Prime (mine is a 2021). After toggling through the various Prius model menus, I noted the latest Prius supported by the scanner is a 2016. For the heck of it, I selected that then tried, unsuccessfully, to find an option to change the reverse beep duration.

I sent a support ticket to Foxwell asking why the Prime doesn’t show up on the tool. At this point I’m a bit irritated with them since I had bought the Toyota firmware package just last year and their site seems to imply they are constantly updating the firmware. I have used the NT520 on my 2005 Honda Pilot and 2014 Toyota Tacoma without any issues. I’ll post back Foxwell’s response once I hear back from them.

Has anyone had any luck getting a Foxwell scan tool to auto-detect the Prime?
What model Foxwell scan tool did you use?
Were you able to change any of the “dealer only” customization options listed near the end of the owners manual?
Are there other useful features of the scan tool which are specific to the Prime?

Thanks for any insight you can offer.

If it supports the 2016, that should allow you to do at least some of the customizations for the Prime. Since they all have the beeping, I would see if it would let you change it to one beep. But it's obviously not enough for everything or for troubleshooting.

I have never used the Foxwell NT520 Pro scan tool, but my impression is that handheld scan tools are not as flexible as the phone app paired with Elm327 Code Reader, such as Carista. And they are cheaper than most handheld scanners. I have used OBDLink LX and Prius Tweak App to turn on/off the reverse beep, but the Carista option is the most popular. I have read you can also use Dr. Prius app with a ELM327 dongle.

I went through every menu option on the scan tool and don’t recall seeing any customization menus. Granted I was focused on finding the selection for the reverse beep mode, so I could have missed others. I’ll have to check again after I receive a response from Foxwell.

I’ll have to look up those options if the Foxwell doesn’t offer decent support for the Prime. At least I’ve gotten my money’s worth out of the Foxwell for my other two vehicles if it turns out to be a bust for the Prime. Thanks for the info.

Maybe find out if you can borrow a Bluedriver OBD2 scan tool. After getting opinions & reading up, then getting one, we still haven't found anything that we haven't been able to reset - or set to our particular preferences.

I’ll have to look into that one as well. I’ve seen it mentioned on the Piloteers forum. Thanks for the info.

Frankly, I wouldn't waste time on the Foxwell. You'll have something that works great if you just get the OBDLink LX that @Salamander_King mentioned. It's one of the few that reads everything the Prime has. Even the Carista misses some stuff. Then use one of the many cheap or free phone apps.

I plan to spend no more than two additional hours to determine if the Foxwell NT520 can make the customization changes. Gotta do due diligence since the Toyota firmware package is already loaded on the scan tool. If unsuccessful, I will take a serious look at the OBDLink.

Prius Teak is an Android-only app, just like Hybrid Assistant and few others. Something about Apple's security policy for the Bluetooth device makes it difficult or impossible for the app developers to adapt to iOS. You may have to pick up a cheap Android phone for some of those apps. The good thing is that you can find very cheap Android phones, unlike iPhones. A $10 used Android phone running older versions of Android 8 or above would work fine. BTW, Prius Tweak may not be found in the Android App store any more, it is the old version but you can still install in an Android phone by sideloading APK from this site.

I have not used it, but Dr. Prius supposed to be able to turn off the reverse beep IIRC. There is an Applie version of the app.

As a follow-up to the Foxwell NT520 Pro Toyota specific firmware package supporting the Prime, Foxwell says their package doesn’t support the 2021 Prime. I asked if it supports a 2016 Prime and am waiting for their response. I don’t have high hopes at this time, and will report back upon receipt of their response.

Thanks for the update. Just an fyi: there is no such thing as a 2016 Prime. It came out in 2017. ;)

My bad. I guess when Wikipedia stated the prime was introduced in 2016 that was the 2017 model.

I heard back from Foxwell and the NT520 Pro only offers Toyota support through 2016. This is contradictory to the product description on their website which clearly states firmware updates will support new vehicles (with no cutoff date listed). I voiced my displeasure to them but it will probably fall on deaf ears. I guess it’s time to look into the alternatives.

I haven’t heard back from Foxwell, probably because they realize their marketing claim was deceitful. At this point I’m going with the NT520 Pro, with the Toyota firmware, will not support the Prius Prime (nor any Toyota product made after 2016 for that matter).

I’m going to try to play around with the unit one last time this weekend, but I’m not hopeful the outcome will be any different than the first attempt.

Road2Cycle, I assume someone else here may offer to help who is closer to you. I have the Toyota Techstream software loaded on a laptop and use a USB to OBD2 connector to connect to my 2018 Prime. I was able to change the options for the reverse beep and also the seatbelt warning. I also did this for a friend where I live on his Prime. If you have any desire to drive up to Sonora I would be happy to help. I get plenty of people who get confused between Sonora and Sonoma, funny find you in Sonoma.

    Hi High Mileage,

Thanks for the offer. I appreciate your willingness to help out a stranger. I’m pretty sure I’m going to purchase a OBD2 dongle and an app (need to research if the smart phone or laptop based one makes more sense) since it’s going to get multiple uses.

As for the Foxwell NT520 Pro I gave it one last attempt last night and have thrown in the towel. It’s been a great tool for my Pilot and Tacoma, but a total bust for the Prime.

Hi road2cycle, no worries. There are several members in the Bay Area that prior to Covid seemed to have regular get togethers and help each other out.
I'm sure you can find the tools you need to accomplish your task, and learn a bit in the process. Offer always stands.
