Resolution of 7” Gen 4 touchscreen?

    What is the actual resolution of the touchscreen? We have a 2020 AWD-e XLE, which has the 7” touchscreen. All the googling I’ve done only indicates it’s “high resolution,” but that’s quite nebulous. Doesn’t seem to be 720p (1280x720), for instance, and Google Maps via CarPlay doesn’t yield as much detail as I’ve experienced with HD screens.

    If it's the same as the 2016-2019, it's WVGA (800x480?); something like that.

    Only the 11.6" is HD (1920x1080).

    Most cars are WVGA actually. I know Hyundai/Genesis have optional 720 resolution screens.

    I don't actually know the resolution of the latest screens (those 10-14" widescreen ones on other cars that are also letterbox in shape)

    It's fine for what I want. I have a photo come up momentarily when it's firing up - and it's quite acceptable. The rear camera is good - in sunlight, pathetic at night, so it's not the screen, but the camera. Heaps better than my previous car which had a 4½" aftermarket GPS with rear camera - it was super-low resolution. [and we get moving lines on the camera - something it seems you don't get].

    I adjusted the camera in my Prime in "night" mode.(I increased the brightness. I can't remember if I touched the contrast setting). You should try adjusting it if it's available on your head unit. It's a bit of a pain in the butt because if you turn on the headlights (so that the headunit is in night mode), you can't adjust that because the brightness/contrast is only for the "display" part in night mode. You have to go into "camera" to adjust it (at least on our version) and then you'd have to shift to Reverse to see if the setting is the way you want. If not, put the car back into Park and then go back into the camera settings.

    But I agree, the camera quality is much better on my 2010 and that had a WVGA 7" MFD compared to my Prime's 11.6" HD screen. I swear Toyota is using a lower quality camera on the Gen 4 Prius. (IOW, instead of a bespoke camera unit, it's probably using the same specification camera as the Corolla class).

    That's interesting. I generally drive during the day with PARKING Lights on - so the tail-lights are shining, I figure that on the motorway it's more important for someone behind me to see me than someone the other side of the median strip.

    So when I reverse out my driveway, the parking lights are on, not headlights. And at Church at night - I've driven in daylight, parked, but it's dark when I reverse out in the darkish carpark - and the headlights are off - that's where I particularly notice the picture poor.

    Maybe I'll try with headlights on - and see if it's better.

    Oh, well the headlights won't make a difference. I was merely stating that to ensure that your headunit is in "night mode". Parking lights should do the trick. The idea is to change the brightness setting and there are multiple settings available in the headunit (brightness/contrast for day mode and night mode as well as camera for day mode and night mode - so 4 settings in total)

    However, if you have automatic headlights (dusk sensor) equipped on your vehicle, you'll need to do the settings at night because turning on the parking lights or headlights during the day will not put the headunit in "night mode" as the sensor would've determined it's bright outside and keep it in "day mode".

    I hadn't noticed that there were dual setting for the camera. Gonna have to try that tonight. Backing into my tiny garage at night is more than a little scary as it is.

    The makes complete sense. It's too bad it's not 720p -- 1280x720 -- which would give a lot more real estate for CarPlay maps (though Google seems to do a bit better than Apple Maps).

    If we end up buying our Prius when the lease is up -- since it'll have probably 10-12K miles on it after 3 years! -- I'd probably install an aftermarket screen, like the new Kenwoods that are 10.1 inches I believe ("floating" screen style).

    There's a few threads in the audio section with aftermarket headunits and they look fine. That's a good idea.

    I went out this morning in the dark and tried adjusting the camera's night setting. IIRC, I lowered the contrast and the brightness one notch each. The adjustments are in big increments, so most of the adjustment range renders the camera blind. But I think it's a little better at night now.

    Yep - I found the brightness and contrast - were both set on mid. I've moved them up to MAX - but I suspect I'll be cutting brightness a bit. Next time I'm out at night.
