The catalytic converter was stolen from my 2nd gen Prius. I see aftermarket converters on eBay for a reasonable price, but was wondering if my car will pass smog with a universal catalytic converter?

From what I've seen on here it will fail to pass visual inspection in California. Last week a guy planned to put a cat guard protector on bottom of his car in hopes of impairing the visual inspection, but haven't heard back yet.

Yeah, it seems they look for the Toyota logo on the cat. It’s ridiculous. I thought it wouldn’t pass due to the sensor.

Not sure if lynwood is in ca but if so ca is the hardest to pass.only the OEM will pass, $1551 plus install which can be pricey too as the sobs cut the OBD harness too and reports of that damaging the car.

    go on YouTube and search

    prius stolen

lots of Ca info but yes they look for the part number on both of the 2 cats.

Is your insurance not covering some of it? When mine was stolen I had to cover maybe a quarter of the cost at the dealership.

.. if they are low enuf to do the dirty job of sawing out the pipe .. maybe they r nice enuf to 'unscrew 'from the ex manifold .. but do u think the ywould take the time to unscrew the o2 sensor when they can snip in a second ? ...

No there not nice enough to unscrew the mani bolts either apparently there's a poster on here now that have the bolts sheared off flat to the manifold collector just a nightmare.

If you think it thru they only have two priorities. #1) Get the cat removed as quickly as possible, #2) Don't get caught...

All the other concerns you have mentioned are not priorities, though it's less noisy to remove the bolts rather than cut so sometimes they do that.

i saw a video of a theif .. he does it in the wee hours .. from start to finish is ~30 min .. real low life .. mills about like a dolt checks out makes sure nothing is going to come out (its probably sometime after midnight if i had to guess) then opens trunk to get his gear out .. lifts the prius and does his work .. u hear the noise of the pipe cutting maybe bolts removing and then the rather hasty exit .. because it's dark the theif looks kinda like a ghost .. image .. cant imagine it bringing more than a few hundred ...

30 minutes? Is that a typo? Most of the youtube videos I've seen show it happens in less than 60 seconds!

That's a unreal. Don't know what to say. What would do if you a guy underneath your car and came out with an electric saw?
10 Years ago I was in woodland hills and there was a car struggling to pull out of the parking lot while talking to a cellphone. The guy almost hit my car.. And he was the one pretending and telling me I was in the way. Right before then I called the police and they showed up so fast. The guy had no drivers license, no insurance, possible outstanding warrants. They took him and his car...
I was in the process of closing a deal on buying a house. The next day I told the realtor, I'm out.. A few months after they I had a job opportunity in another state. I took it,.....
I know all that place. I use to go to Lynwood in 1984. There were people but for most it was peaceful, so as La Mirada, Orange county. I grew up in Torrance. But that was more than 30 years ago.

Where exactly do you live? California has super strict rules. I never vote for Democrats in California myself. I'm not the problem in California, people that vote for Democrats are.

If my dogs are barking I'm breaking out the 12 Gage pump. Unlike our British brothers I'm getting mine. Thief's know the sound of a 12 gauge pump.

when I use to travel in Frisco back in the early 80's almost everyone was driving European classic cars. Thats how it all started and brought it with me since. I went ahead and got me some extra shells the other day and along the way I picked something really nice.. A new toy. I told the guy, that's exactly what I was looking for. The ricardo tubbs inside the jacket twin mini pumps.

By far the dumbest most ignorant ill-informed treasonous thing you've ever said. I'm clicking on the 'ignore' button for you so I never see what you say ever again. Good riddance!!!

Yeah, BS. I don't know where you went in the city, but in the Sunset district at that time it was mostly a mix of Japanese econobox's and low end to mid range US makes. The only "classic" European I ever saw were some really old beaten up VW bugs and buses in the Haight. There must have been European classics somewhere, perhaps Pacific Heights or one of the other super swanky districts, but it was hardly "when in SF I could not wave my arms about without striking an Alfa Romeo".
