Thanks Mendel, not sure my car still has the full engine cover on it, it has the piece under radiator support which looks like it would block me from servicing the can

The main reservation i have with it being high is pooling at the hose end of pcv, however it would be nice to establish how often i need to service it before putting in in an awkward position

Thanks very much for all the advice guys :)

Thanks Dogman I found one similar to the first pic that will get me out of trouble, like a brass toothbrush, will get a heap more of this stuff on eBay to make life easier for next time I need to do this

Your posts are making me really want to check out my intake and valves. When I cleaned my EGR a couple years ago they were really cruddy but I didn't bother trying to clean them out. Though since then, I've used several cans of fuel cleaner (BG EPR), did the Toyota de-carb service, and have used only top tier fuel so I'm just really curious as to whether they got any cleaner or not. I should probably replace the intake manifold gasket anyway so maybe I'll put it on my list for an afternoon project.

The ports and valves stay a lot cleaner than a solely direct-injected engine, anyway.

It's not something I wanted to muck around with to be honest, could have easily left it alone but didnt want to put a clean manifold back on with filthy ports, then by the time I cleaned the ports the crud washed past the jam-rags deep down to the valve area, but it turned out okay they will be fine, and clean.

I use injector cleaner every other tank religiously and my ports were bad .. but would have been like that before I got the car

If I done this again the first thing I would do is with valve closed dry scrape and vacuum out as much as I could

Wouldnt hurt for you to check that stupid manifold again, that thing probably needs doing twice as often as cooler

The Prius engine is a direct injection engine. The injector's do not spray across the valves.
So they don't clean the valve or the port. That is why they get dirty. I believe some engines
now have 2 injectors, one for direct injection and the other on the intake to spray through the
intake passage which cleans the intake around the valves. They switch between the two.

    It’s port injection, no?

It sprays the fuel directly into the cylinder, not into the manifold port.

guess how many km or miles might be on these plugs :) I guess they are the originals, might shed some light on how much work this engines done..

They still look decent to me, will give them a quick clean and put back in IMG_20210308_151722_318.jpeg IMG_20210308_151651_905.jpeg

    Lol! (y)

IIRC your guiding principle is to make it good, but weigh too its age and lifespan.

    Lol Mendel,

The catch can is because I got p0401 and hope to delay head gasket failure

I generally only replace iridium plugs because of a misfire, or they look shocking! These look about 200-250k km to me

I've got it in my head that I may need to do a head gasket soon, that's when I will replace them.. or maybe when I do a major service which is a later this year

only took them out to inspect and try get an idea of how much work the engines done, I don't mind replacing them once they're done, they ain't done!.

Seen way worse looking iridium than this still in service :) ..

Do you think they look bad?

Is this the same sort of this that you are using for soaking Mendel, from the laundry section Image%20(5).jpeg

I thought the plugs looked ok too. Just my OCD would say “as long as we’re here change them, done for another 200k”. But I respect the conservative approach and being cognizant of the car’s possibly limited future.

I used a powdered product called Oxi-Clean up here. The middle tub in your pic similar?

The plugs are fairly easy to do anyway. But I'll bet they are not original.
Toyota used ND plugs, not NGK.
If you have a bor scope type camera you can look down inside the cylinder and see if the #1 piston
looks clean. If it does, head gasket. If it looks the same as the other 3, you're probably okay.
And since you are cleaning the egr system, you're head gasket should be fine.

Haha Mendel I'm conservative yet ocd, it's not easy both halves are always arguing with each other. Anyway they look okay, I will soak and brush them to get rid of buildup..

That stuff in middle pictures active ingredient is Sodium Percarbonate, about 350g/kg from memory, I just want to try it now the manifold is 90% clear, my ocd won't let me put it back on until it's spotless due to the way this crud expedientially spreads

Dogman thanks for the tip they may not be original, I had been wondering, I know toyota factory installed ngk in some gen2 here Australia but was not sure about gen3 so thanks for clarifying that, who ever replaced the engine 100k km ago may have decided it was a good time to wack a set in so this engines more than likely half way through it's second set of plugs.. don't have a bore scope but I will try get a look with the camera on my phone.

I first used brake cleaner on the manifold, got it “serviceable” clean. Then thinking to do better, did several oxi-clean soaks. More stuff floated out, but it seemed never ending. Looking at the interior of the main Exhaust Gas Recirculation gallery in particular, it’s rough surfaced, and I got the impression the oxi-clean soaks would never get it all.

Hmm, from previous experience on cleaning things that get dirty :) I believe it will re grow much quicker if every last bit is not cleaned, tried dawn over night but it done nothing..

Im just trying to get the main cylinder ports in manifold clean now, egr passages are decent so it can go back on one day soon! I'm not in a rush as we have a couple cars in service, just trying to get this sort of stuff done while the weather is warm-ish

Oxi definitely tarnishes the metal hardware on manifold, but it works okay and doesn't seem to have hurt it otherwise,

some don't like using the supplied hose that comes with cheapie ebay catch cans, is it really a problem or will it be okay

Hoping to get it back together when I get home this arvo :)

Black rubber fuel line is good, should be readily available. In North America spec is usually SAE30R7 (or 6). With barbed connector I don’t think hose clamps are necessary, even stress the hose.
