When I arrived home today I was sitting in my driveway after my 75 minute drive with my engine idling and all of the sudden the red triangle and engine light came on on my dash.

I used the doctor Prius app to check the battery codes and I got these: HV battery ecu error code: P0607, P3000, and P3013.

Also the battery fan was running very loudly. I don't think I've ever actually heard the battery fan run before. I'm just saying it must have been running full speed or something.

I cleared the code and took the car for a drive down the road to see how it drove. Immediately the battery gauge went down to very low and I could tell I was running solely off of the gas engine. When I stopped the battery recharged to 100% but still wasn't assisting. So this must be a false reading.

I did the battery health check with Dr Prius and it says 24% remaining and battery is at end of life. Here are some pictures. Can anybody make any kind of recommendation?

The car has been doing fantastic with absolutely no complaints. The hv battery has been functioning perfectly and charges and discharges exactly as expected. This is just such a weird thing to pop up so suddenly.

Here are some screenshots I took in case they help.

The P3000 just means there's a malfunction in the traction battery. The P3013 narrows it to battery block #3, which you can see from Dr. Prius is really low in voltage. The P0607, if I understand what I've read, is a little fuzzy but has to do with the control module.

Apparently it hasn't yet thrown a P0A80, so you might be able to bring it back with grid charging, but no guarantees. There's also the possibility of corroded sensor wires throwing off the readings.

If it really is a bad cell and not just a compromised wiring harness and you plan to keep the car, I'd also recommend http://newpriusbatteries.com if you're a DIY person, or a new battery from Toyota if you're not.

Thank you for the help. When I first got my Prius I investigated my options if my battery ever went out and decided on newPriusbatteries.com if it ever did. I'm assuming that the battery is indeed going out considering the age of the vehicle.

You're still in the earliest stages of this being a problem... You can safely keep driving it if you keep clearing the code and make sure the battery temp doesn't get too hot. Also, if you're DIY you could spend $30 and replace the bad module and possibly avoid having to replace the pack for months or a year.

Main number to pay attention to is "voltage diff" on Dr. Prius app... The higher that number goes, the more likely it's about to throw error codes.

Thanks. I'll give it a try and see if I can still drive the car. I'll weigh out my options and see what I can figure out.

Another option is to find a second used battery pack at the wrecker... I've been able to buy them for $50 at times and then you do a bunch of charging and discharging of the modules to test and recondition and that way you'll always have a spare pack on your shelf to help friends and family, or yourself in the future.

I'm not wanting to get into reconditioning and balancing the packs myself to be honest. I wouldn't even know where to begin and I doubt I have the equipment to do it.

I called my local total dealer and they sell a new factory battery for $1950. So I'll have to consider that route too I guess.

That's a good price, especially if it's installed for that price. If the car's worth saving, I'd do that.

That's just the price of the battery. I can install it myself I'm pretty sure. The $1450 installed from green bean is pretty tempting. I'm going to find long term reviews and see if they hold up. The new lifetime unlimited miles warranty is very tempting

don't fall for it. i would go for the oem. warranty unnecessary

that being said, the biggest factors are how many miles currently, and how long/miles do you want to keep her?

The best warranty is the one never used. The closest you'll get to that is the OEM replacement. Just keep in mind the OEM replacement does not come as a complete assembly. You must remove some components (the electronics/control section, mostly) from the original battery and install it on the new. Plenty of videos online.

I didn't know it wouldn't come as a complete unit. I'm sure I could figure it out with the help of youtube.

I would like to keep this car for at least a couple more years.

If you spend a few hundred dollars more you'll have a brand new pack for 10 years without issue. And you can use that pack on a gen3 in the future. GreenBeen is a rebuilt pack = 3month to 3years, but if they're still giving generous warranty it might be worth it.

Do you mean that I can just direct swap a gen 2 battery over to a gen 3 Prius? That might be an interesting upgrade in the future.

The battery modules are the same. Everything that attaches to them is not. You would have to remove them from the Gen2 battery housing then reassemble them in the Gen3 housing.

Not a direct swap. But you can transplant the modules as a whole set. I installed a battery in my wife's '07 in 2017 with a 2015 battery's modules in it. We got that battery for close to Green Bean prices. But for $500 difference and a little work, the new Toyota battery that should last 10-15 years is a way better deal than the Green Bean that will have you using the warranty every few months.

Yup just go OEM its lasted like 15 years, why chance another brand this time. I ordered mine for $1900 and had it swapped in 2hrs after watching youtube. I just watched the video a few times and then setup the laptop and followed step by step. Been going strong for a year+ now

The guy who makes the alternative new battery replacement on this forums seems good aslo but that about the only alternative id consider.

yes, same modules in gen2 as in Gen3... Just swap the chassis, which takes about 45min...
