Just that there may be differences in the plumbing, wiring, due to the foreign regs.

Upon further review I see what was throwing me off. Its the thermostat hard line. that gets removed that is the extra part so with that out of the picture it all makes sense. By the way can you use the map and throttle body I read somewhere they are identical just facing the other direction. Can someone point me to the Torque specs I had seen a list somewhere.

    Hey engine swappers :)

Just a question I know it's not a 4th gen engine however, here in Australia 2ZR-FE corolla engines are a dime a dozen in wrecking yards but gen3 prius engines are expensive! obviously the corolla is an otto engine but I have been wondering if the bottom end alone is the same enough to use in prius with the original prius head installed, does this effectively convert it to a prius engine?

On a side note do I need to monitor the oil pressure on first run as the engine has sat in a warehouse the oil was removed an so I wonder do I need to prime the oil pump? just asking cause I have never done this before.

As long as you don’t remove the oil pan, the pump shouldn’t lose its prime.

I’ve a vague recollection the cams are different, higher/longer lift, but that’s not “bottom end”. On the Prius there is a blanking plate where the starter motor would be, so you’d need to procure (or swap over) that plus it’s bolts.

There might well be more differences; don’t take the above to the bank.

Maybe different compression too, I'm not sure, when the time comes I will dig deeper

A few bargain cars pop up now n then with dead engine, it would just be nice to know if the corolla bottom ends are useful in prius

You would have to check the individual part number of the pistons, rods, crank, and block to be sure. I checked my cataloging at work and I don’t show any part numbers for the Prius internals.

Brand new short block prohibitively expensive? I’d at least see what you’re looking at.

@ozmatt I searched otto cycle atkinson cycle differences and one of the links pointed to a post here at PC
The conversation starts to get interesting IMO, around post # 4 Atkinson vs. Otto Cycle | PriusChat
I'm interested because there is another thread concerning the 50% efficiency of gas engine claims from Nissan and one of the posts mentioned the miller cycle.

Thanks guys, it's not important yet I'm just thinking about future options, if corolla bottom end is similar enough to prius it seems like a feasible idea to strip off the corolla head, clean piston tops and reinstall cleaned up prius head with fresh vrs kit

Mendel I'm not sure I haven't priced one, but I expect it wouldnt be too cheap

Anyone know the hose size that connects to the gooseneck? I have a leak right there and want the Old school hose clamps. I like the new style clamps but this one not doing the job.

A question for you since you're very knowledgeable I'm not getting warm water on the lower radiator hose I suspect a bad thermostat or a bad pump as it is making a funny noise in any case my old pump and thermostat work perfectly fine in my old engine can I reuse those from a gen 3 engine or should I just buy new set

I’m just an armchair mechanic reading along lol. How many miles on the 3rd gen water pump and thermostat? The pump has plastic impeller fins and as the miles accumulate gets harder to turn. The consensus here seems to be somewhere between 100k and 150k miles replacement is prudent.

Also, I think part no for 4th might be different; check by looking both gens up on online parts place. The diffs (if they are diff parts) might be trivial, or not.

The pumps are made by a third party for Toyota, and can be cheaper without the Toyota logo I believe?

    @Raytheeagle might weigh in.

If it were me I would put a new pump and thermostat on there if I changed anything. Are you monitoring the engine temperature with a scanner? What are you seeing?

Six months ago, it was cheaper to buy this part at the dealer then it was aftermarket. Now they are within a few dollars of the dealer.

I'm getting 190 to 215 so I know it's overheating. Plus at high temp lower radiator hose is cold to the touch. The pump came with the engine so sat unused for 2 years at least. All right so I'm getting a new pump that being said can I use the thermostat from the Gen 3 engine

Anyone know which way coolant’s flowing in that hose?
