That's what I was wondering. They have no right to install stuff on your car that you don't want. A lease would be different, but if you're buying, they have no say in what gets installed. I'm glad you got it out of there. Hope you can track down the rest of the thing, @PiPLosAngeles.

    The score so far:

    1. Inept and hamfisted tracking device stealth installed.

    2. That installation effed up a serious safety device, the parking brake.

Follow through on @Elektroingenieur suggestion to file a NHTSA report? Maybe Toyota USA might even be interested?

Unknown data collection I'd like to say isn't, but if even that is the case, authorization by the buyer could get buried in any of the papers you sign.

Yes. Every purchase contract I've seen around here explicitly calls out the device (read those long contracts people). I've had dealers completely unwilling to sell the car even after getting all the way to signing paperwork in the finance department. The only reason I can figure is that they are contractually obligated to install them in ALL cars by their insurance or the manufacturer.

Something to add to my incredibly long list of reasons to not move to California. :( Too bad. It's such a pretty place.

The geography is beautiful, but the rest of it I despise with every fiber of my being in a way that's difficult to put into words. If it weren't for taking the kids away from their friends and grandparents I would have left a long time ago.

My sister left a few years ago. She was just fed up and she live up in the high desert east of San Diego. Her daughter, grands, etc. are still in So.Cal and miserable.

But I do enjoy visiting as long as I can stay out of the cities.

Meh, you're just in the wrong part of the state;).

While the Bay Area has its drawbacks, there are plenty of good reasons I have found as a native Northeastern Pennsylvanian:).

Let's just say we are done with the cold, tornadoes and humidity of other states(y).

Don't forget lovebugs! :D Twice a year, I just want to get out of here. But it's only for a few weeks in May & October while taxes and draconian regulations are year round. ;)

But yeah, climate-wise, FL is still the armpit of North America.

Forgot to post a thank you for the reminder. Indeed, the tires were at 48 psi.
