EGR cooler gasket not correctly fit exhaust side

    cheers Mendel, i have a little more one meter of 3/8 fuel line, and a brass 3/8 to 3/8 joiner, was just hoping i could get away with using the supplied clear hose on the pcv side but some say its no good

    got more fuel line today, I'm pretty much done just a matter of connecting the can!

    Wondering which way around you guys connect the hoses on these cheap cans, does it matter? My first thoughts are the end that goes to the filter should go to the pcv?

    are most putting a tiny piece of steel wool in the little screw in filter cap bit, or is it best to just put a full size piece of wool in bottom of the can IMG_20210312_154858_825.jpeg

    thanks Mendel and Dogman, took the car for a good run today its going great better than ever, and touch wood no rattles when i started it cold (not that it ever has, yet!)

    My Oil Catch Can is a different style, but I believe the filter goes on the intake manifold side.

    Are you doing the cut the PCV hose at the middle trick? Makes for handy elbows, and good fit. See page 1 of @danlatu thread on Oil Catch Cans.

    If you chuck the hose barbs in a drill press, you can turn them like a lathe and slightly blunt the barbs with a file, makes it more forgiving if you ever want to disassemble.

    Hose clamps should not be needed with the hose barb connections, may even be detrimental to the hose ends.

    Be smart, and use clamps on the hoses. Just don't over tighten them. After ten years though,
    they may damage the hoses so you'll have to replace them.

    yep, on the manifold side anyway, cut original hose in half and used 3/8 3/8 joiner same as you, the end to pcv is direct fit with 3/8 hose

    ahh, i have it the other way, filter side "in" to the pcv .. would love some closure on this there is so many videos with people doing it both ways its confusing!

    have used some hose clamps in some places and not in others, now dogman has me thinking twice about the places without hose clamps lol

    seems smoother to drive, some of that i put down to not hearing exhaust leaking anymore where that gasket was only half on between cooler and exhaust

    It won't hurt to use the clamps.
    I believe the pipping(piping?) should be: PCV valve to Catch Can "inlet".
    Catch Can "outlet" to intake manifold.
    Steel Wool should be on the "intlet" side to slow down and catch most of the oil so you only get
    the gases going into the engine.

    Cheers Dogman, i have it that way currently, will cut a small piece of steel wool pad to put in the little filter baffle that unscrews..

    Will report back about how much junk is in catch can, in a month or two.. via @danlatus main occ thread

    well guys, to my surprise although everything went well with the egr & manifold cleaning and catch can install, today while driving (second time driven since work performed) P0401 has returned! damn it...

    its no surprise to be honest, its a reflection of what things have been like for me of late lol

    to be honest i always had reservations about the egr being clogged enough to set the code to begin with, and had been blaming it on that gasket not being correct

    everything is spotless and all work was done with meticulous care, i have to guess the motor its self has perhaps failed

    :)

    Perhaps the egr valve is bad?
    If you've cleared the code, and it comes back, maybe it just needs to be drive a while and
    on/off cycles need to build up for the computer to clear it permanantly.

    Hi Dogman

    Anyone know if the motor, spring and magnet is specific to gen3 prius?

    Yeah i cleared the code and light was out for a day or two, then it came back after a couple drive cycles I was coasting down hill in b (fuel cut /off accelerator) similar to techstream egr test procedure

    Mechanical part of valve works well and its in good condition, when operated by hand it returns to base nice n snappy, would like to try a motor magnet & spring first but not much available on eBay Australia, I have gen2 parts galore but nothing for gen3, always the way!

    @Raytheeagle FYI, if you were curious, I had my IM off yesterday to replace the PCV valve and took a peek into the intakes. Pretty clean. When I cleaned my EGR a couple years ago everything looked gunked, like a demon had spit tar in there. The valves and intake walls were all clean, with only a thin layer of expected crud behind the point of the fuel injectors.
