I have been trying to look around online but there doesn't seem to be any kind of discussion on if it would be possible to convert or force the Prius gen 2 engine (or any Prius engine) to run as an otto cycle. This brings up compression and thermodynamic questions. I have a gen 2 that's coming up rapidly on 300K km and am expecting it to quit soon anyway - it will then become my tinkering project. At that point, I will no longer be concerned about the fuel efficiency just if the engine and engine components can handle the extra compression and explosive energy. Anyone know of design specs online for the gen 2 engine so I can do thermo cycle and energy analysis?

You would likely have better luck with converting it into a jet engine and putting it into a plane.
This is the best one I've heard in a LONG time.
You need something else to occupy your time.

A Yaris / Echo 1NZ-FE has about 210psi compression with a 10.5 to 1 ratio. If that intake cam could fit a Prius 1NZ-FXE you'd have maybe 250-260 psi with the 13 to 1 ratio. Load it up with race gas and it might run long enough to launch the rods out.
