Been with Progressive for 30 years there excellent. Few crashes no questions asked they fixed everything.

To the original poster concerning the oil loss where do you get your oil changed?

I get my oil changed at 2 different dealers depending on timing. I don’t have anyone nearby who works on hybrids and I rely on the multipoint inspection.

That’s great that you’ve had excellent service. Obviously depends on location and reps plus auto insurance companies often treat their paying customers better than the people their paying customers hit. If they wanted more business, they should spend more time and money training their staff to treat everyone like a potential customer. Much cheaper than investing in so much advertising.

    Hopefully the bumpers don’t fit but if they do I’ll have to hope they are decent quality. : }

It depends on what type of oil you pay for. If the dealer uses Toyota brand 5W-30 or you pay more for fully synthetic oil, then dealer oil changes have no bearing.

If you want to know Ed's take just search for his many posts on the subject.

In "the world of Ed", all dealership service departments will overfill your engine with the lowest quality oil available and cause oil consumption and/or catastrophic engine failure. Also, one out of every two Gen2 prius on the planet has a failed high voltage battery.

Thank you! Ok I’m pretty sure both dealerships use Toyota conventional oil but I guess I better check. Plus what they say and what they do may be two different things.

2000 miles after last oil change the dipstick showed the oil was down at the bottom line which was out of the ordinary. Typically I need to add oil around 3000-4000 miles after oil change.

Did you check the dipstick immediately after the oil change to confirm what level it was?

FWIW when doing oil changes I put in the specd amount, carefully measured, and checked a day or two later, it’s an 1/8” to 3/16” below the top mark. And right after the oil change, I purposely don’t check it, it tends to read low IIRC.

Also, so far, it never budges, oil change to oil change, which is just a little eerie in my books.

In short, do check the oil, albeit after its had a chance to settle down. And recheck regularly, get familiar with it.

I asked because the OP uses someone to do it for her. It is a different proposition when you DIY.

No and I’m annoyed with myself because I meant to start checking after this last oil change and didn’t. Then ironically there was an issue. I will from now on.

Picking my repaired car up tomorrow.

I'm surmising that the car is not using more oil than usual and that the oil was not filled to the "Full" mark after the last change. Only time will tell.

See this all the time here with people who run there car oil dry and toast the motor.

    Dealer oil change:

They use really cheap oil that they use for prepaid oil changes and the cheap oil change. Throw the dealer your keys and say change it that’s what your getting.

They don’t check the oil level before dumping it so you will never know
It’s starting to eat oil. They could care less
SAE trained mechanics aren’t changing your oil a minimum wage guy is.
Get it in get it out. They routinely overfill it.

And the most important factor is since its “dealer maintained”
It imparts in the owners mind there’s some magic going on under the hood everything is being closely monitored by the mother ship and that relieves me of any personal responsibility under there.

Do you know how many posters come on this site with check engine lights on and come to this site join and post before they even open the hood?

So crappy oil= high piston ring wear so it starts eating oil because of it combined with continuously running the car with low oil makes piston wear much worse and oil loss.

Check your cars engine oil minimum once a week on a level surface before starting the car.
If it’s a little below the full line add some oil. Keep track of it if this is consistent thing. If it’s consistently eating oil move your oil up to a higher viscosity like 40 weight this engine runs fine on 40 weight it will help the oil loss.

    I agree with that bit.

Case in point, our sons Mazda CX-5, happened to have a dealership oil change, due to oil leak issue. Specd fill capacity (with filter change is 4.5 litres).

My oil catch container has 5.5 litres in gradations, plus a little more headroom. We had to jam the drain bolt back in just before it overflowed, had a nice mess.

Son has talked to service manager before (this is second time round...), is going to Mazda Canada this time.
