Less than 3 millions (worldometers.info) have died from COVID, and in a global sense, that ain't many. Its terrible toll on global health-care system can be appreciated where people may look, to appreciate such things.

It has driven vaccine makers to up their game. Not just for this, but for next time when the next bat (or whatever) passes the next zoontic to humans. In that way I can call it a large success.

No doubt, there are folks who fear human intellectual progress like this. What prior (better?) world they ache for, I do not know.

Humans will become more and take more from this lovely planet. I find it inconceivable that 'already' viruses and other (microbial, parasitic) hangers-on will not join in the taking.

The expanding human enterprise will confront more problems like this, and if anyone calls fighting back 'elite', it matters little to me.

Reverting centuries back to when human immune systems were naively good enough for how we were then, just won't do. We are not like that anymore.

i suspect the reference to 'elite' is anyone who does not think like they do, involved in some sphere of influence.

It is so sad that some people have turned the definition of ‘elite’ on its head.

When I go in for surgery, given my choice, I want the best surgeon available. One that is studied, talented, a quick thinker. Basically an “elite” surgeon.

When I hire a plumber, I want the best plumber available. Or in other words, an elite one.

    ^ That's not a "discussion."
    That's a recording of a discussion.

I already have a phone full of podcast recordings ranging from "panic porn" to "virus hoax."

The efficacy of vaccines is pretty clear.
If you don't want to go back to the 1700's - try finding somebody with polio today....or Typhus (outside of some of our more backwards states....)
    Vaccines are settled science
More so than whether or not coffee and real butter are good for you this year or bad for you.
WAY more than whether Vegans live longer on average, or they are so irritating and smarmy that they just SEEM to live longer.
    WAY WAY more than AGW.

I'm second dose Pfizer plus two weeks.....TODAY.
As I said earlier I didn't have to push an oldie out of line or visit another state.
My state did not tranche doses out using some weird woke-science, but rather they started with the group who were actually getting sick and dying from the bug and worked their way down.
Seems to be working for us.

I live in a state where schools, bars, hotels, eateries, EVERYTHING is open.
I carry a mask in case I enter a business where the employees are forced to wear a mask over their face holes, instead of just around their neck, and I stick it on my face maybe 2-3 times a week.

Mask Karens and anti-vaxers are like this sad thing that I see on TV from another country.

When elite isn't defined, it is as @bisco said. In many cases i goes beyond that. For the person using the term, it really doesn't matter who exactly they consider who the elite is. They are trying to get the audience to think of who they see as a negative elite, and thus invoke a fear or anger response in them.

This got me thinking of sprains.

The immune response to such injuries is to basically flood the area with blood and crate swelling. By limiting movement at the injury site, swelling acts like a split to prevent further injury.

For those 'amazing immune system' folks, they should skip on any outside aids to the immune system in regards to sprains, like they do for infectious disease. So no outside drug to reduce the swelling. Maybe even skip the ice pack.

They won't because of the pain. Which is a good thing in regards to the injury. Swelling was a good response back when we didn't have outside intervention for injuries, but it delays long term healing, which can already be long in regards to sprains. It restricts blood flow in and out of the site. That means any potentially toxic byproducts from the injury take longer to leave the site, and get flushed from the body. While it takes longer to get oxygen, nutrients, and other immune system agents to get to the site to aid healing.

    Elitists deserve it.
If you want somebody to fix your car, get the stuff you shouldn't have flushed out of your plumbing system, or perform a thoracic aortic dissection repair - you want somebody who is able to actually DO it....not spend 16 hours a day in cheesing front of a TV camera.....or writting 42 pounds of "peer reviewed" papers virtually none of which are human-read above the graduate student level (who get credit for summarizing them) or below the graduate student level (who could give a rats.)

One of the TWO really great things about the xkcd comics are that they combine humor AND relatable sciency things.....something beyond the ability of many if not MOST of the "elite" people who get paid to essentially.....do not much in the real world.
The other great thing about xkcd is the fact that their work is covered under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 2.5 License.

One of their comics appeared in the Covid Humor thread and perhaps bears repeating.
I shared it with a fence-sitter yesterday and got that famous...."Oh!" expression of understanding so eagerly sought for by REAL educators.

unfortunately, we're dependent on pharma for most medicines. unless we want to search the rainforest, chewing on this and that. nobody likes them until they need them.

T+5:30: no symptoms so far. N&D’est was by far the biggest hurdle: pretty rough but I think we’re out of the woods. :)

The possibility that immunity to a coronavirus might fade very quickly, has been clear for a very long time, well before this pandemic started. As I posted nearly a year ago:

    SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus (COVID-19) | Page 89 | PriusChat
"There are a couple hundred known coronaviruses afflicting mammals. Of those, 7 are known to afflict humans: 4 that cause ordinary common colds (229E, NL63, OC43, and HKU1), and 3 for much nastier diseases: SARS, MERS, and Covid-19."

    SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus (COVID-19) | Page 119 | PriusChat
"(*) The rates of ordinary influenzas from the four mild coronaviruses (**) that afflict humans, pretty clear mean that the immunities built up from having them, typically don't last long. As I pointed out in another thread, it appears that Americans will typically have each one very roughly ten times per lifetime. So it isn't a stretch to consider the possibility that Covid-19 immunity may similarly not last long."

One of my middleschool teachers, an old geezer, had polio when he was young, and had a partial disability from it. A paralyzed arm. He was lucky, he didn't need an iron lung.

The lack of anti-vaxxers in his era -- back then, they all could see the devatations of those diseases first-hand -- is the reason I don't know anyone anywhere close to my own vintage who suffered a similar fate.
