It happened a couple of times when the car was new, now it happened again twice in a week: I am quietly cruising EV at 45 mph, traction battery at around 40%, when some idiot enters the highway cutting my way... to avoid it I need to change lane flooring the accelerator pedal for a second or two to gain speed and... and suddenly ICE wakes up revving up, obviously still cold. It is a sensation that makes my blood run cold in my veins..

Because someone’s merging onto the freeway you need to change lanes and floor it?

Glad to hear you don't have any bigger problems to worry about! Congrats!

In the US, there's a phrase "White people problems" that would apply.

Either brake very hard, or avoid it... these times people drive like crazy, especially when curfew time (10 pm) is approaching. Anyway

I was considering that HSD gives priority to the battery health over ICE health... I wish my Prius had new 0W8 lubricant instead than 0W20.
For the Italian drive habits... well, next week I will do a business trip in Texas, so I will have the opportunity to make a comparison. For sure, you have a lot more law enforcement...

Did I read somewhere PP in EU comes EV AUTO as a default? With regular EV mode in the US model, flooring the pedal does not start the engine as long as there is enough battery charge left. Around here, no one knowing what "yield" means when margins to the highway, I sometimes have to change to the passing lane, but I almost never have to floor the pedal.

Yeah EU spec cars don’t have a full range EV mode like the US. EV mode is our EV Auto. They have an EV City for low speed city driving where it will keep the engine off but power output is reduced.

Even the EV City will turn on the engine if the pedal is floored. Only in the US is it seen as bad for the engine of a PHEV to come on in EV mode.

What are these lane things you speak of!!?????:ROFLMAO::D:)

Having owned and driven first gen hybrids; you learn not to get upset at these idiots - life's too short. I do like playing "chicken" with those shiny, expensive, new sports cars on a merge.:rolleyes::barefoot: Ran several of them into the dirt/shoulder; when I had the right of way and they were suppose to yield.:mad: I guess they thought they could intimidate a slow hybrid in the right lane, with their big V8 engines and small 'hands':p. Hey I can use a new car, and they're going to pay for it - can't argue with my car cam footage. Word of caution though; there's lots of uninsured motorist out here and it's only getting worse. I'm seeing lots of expired license plates on the road these days. What are the chances they're paying for insurance?

If you ever driven in foreign countries where traffic laws were more guidelines than laws or rules; you know what I mean.

Have you ever driven in Italy? :)

The times I've been there, it's 'who ever has the bigger balls, wins'

Word of caution: at least where I live (south Florida), in addition to a lot of uninsured drivers there are also a lot of armed drivers. It seems like we have at least one or two road rage shooting every couple of weeks.

Yes, the onus is on the merging driver to yield, but a bit of common courtesy goes a long way. I’m not sure if having a dashcam were you to put someone in a ditch, instead of just backing off and just letting them merge, would help your case.

When someone is merging onto the freeway YOU should earthier move over ,slow down or speed up to allow the oncoming vehicle to get on the freeway. They have no where to go. It's called being courteous. THEY have nowhere to go. They are trying to get up to speed to enter the freeway. DON'T BE THAT A..HOLE !!!! Thank you "road2cycle" for your comment. TOOOOO Many ANGREY Drivers out there. You never know when some crazy person is having a bad day and ruins yours. JUST be KIND to one another people. It's not that hard

You've missed the point; first gen hybrids don't accelerate; they barely have enough power to get out of their own way. Your tootling along at a steady 60-65 mph; they can easily slide in behind you or in front - but sliding in right next to your passenger door at the end of the merge lane is unacceptable. We're not talking about stop and go traffic - again the first gen hybrid will loose that fight too.
So your saying that panic stopping in the middle of the right lane to let them in is the solution; cause I certainly couldn't match the other car's ability to speed up?????? I'm likely to get rear-ended; if I did that.

Anticipate the situation. Look out for other drivers. Drive defencive at all times. Avoiding a collision is the goal.

Exactly. The OP drives like an Italian and needs an Italian performance car, not a Prius.
