As cool as it may sound... I wonder how many hours the projector bulbs are rated for? Have you ever looked at the prices for replacement bulbs for digital projection monitors? Do you want to spend $30 on new headlight bulbs when they go bad or do you want to spend $1500? Keeping cars simple and affordable is smarter than this over-priced ridiculousness...

No different than someone who drives 1-2 hours total in the dark every morning and afternoon for commutes. (I.e. those of us in the northern latitudes)

I could do without the additional projectors on the doors and such, but the idea of active headlights that can just avoid shining in the eyes of oncoming drivers, while continuing to light the rest of the road, has some appeal.

High end cars (and even a loaded Rav4) now have adaptive headlights that sense you are turning and turn on additional LEDs. Plus they sense when high beams are safe for on coming drivers and when they aren't switch the headlight pattern. And turn on the headlights and taillights when it gets dark. Amazing that you just don't fool with the light switch as much any more.

Adaptive headlights is different from adaptive high beams (which is what you're referring to).

Adaptive headlights can selectively blank out sectors of the roads (well dim, not blank) to avoid blinding oncoming drivers or pedestrians or cyclists. The light in the remaining area is at high beam to maintain visibility.

It's this selective dimming that Audi calls their AHS "matrix LED".

Has the US vehicle code changed to allow these here?

Not yet. It's "under review". (Well it's been that way since 2017 or 2018).

Side note: I have noticed more vehicles here allowing sequential signals without a secondary blinker one. (Audi used to do a blinker plus sequential to get around the law requiring a blinking light for a turn signal).

I have a US '19 Rav4 Limited with Adaptive headlights. They change to illuminate the inside of a curve without any intervention by me. They switch to headlights bright when needed with no intervention by me. They switch to headlights dim when sensing it is appropriate because of the available light or because of an oncoming car's headlights. They switch headlights/taillights on when it is dark without any intervention by me.

I don't care what the technology is behind it is, all I know and care about is that it does this all for me now. And is legal in the US now.

If Audi does the same with different technology, good for them. But it isn't revolutionary.

Matrix(adaptive) headlights would just dim the light hitting the on coming car, leaving the light they project down your lane on high beam. Which could mean not losing sight of a deer or something on a dark road because the high beams went low for the on coming car. The technology is far from new now, but because they are technically on high beam all the time, they weren't legal in the US when they first arrived to the market.

Yeah that’s swivelling headlights (adaptive headlights). Confusing eh?

Adaptive headlights - swivel as you turn
Adaptive high beam (AHB) - auto switches between high and low beam
Adaptive headlight system ( AHS) - keeps high beams on and selectively dims to maintain maximum visibility.

Keep in mind that some of these systems can change beam pattern. As you slow to a stop, they’ll become short and wide to see pedestrians on the curb. As you travel faster at highway speeds, they become brighter and narrower to focus light as far down the road as possible.
