I need help guys, I’ve been stranded in Van Horn, TX for 4 days in my 2011 Prius. My inverter over heated due to failed inverter water pump.

There is NOTHING here to help; 1 auto parts store that doesn’t have the part. No car rentals. I need to get to El Paso, TX autozone to pick up the part I need to fix the car. I’ve ordered the part 4 days ago; there is no autozone here for them to mail it to.

I tried to catch a greyhound bus to El Paso but the bus has been cancelled. Anybody in El Paso or nearby that can drive the part to me? I can pay you. If anyone can help please contact me 504-919-9581 -Brian.

This has been hell and it’s getting scary. Any ideas on what I can do would help too.

That's a 242 mile round trip. Perhaps you could call and hire an Uber to BRING the part to you.

Along with a gallon of the correct Prius pink coolant...

Have you tried ordering one and have it shipped to you from Amazon?

You are clearly unfamiliar with Texas (probably why you'd be so scared). Van Horn is a tiny town in the middle of nowhere about 100 miles from anything. 1) Uber is an urban service, so an available driver is incredibly unlikely (though not impossible). 2) A round trip would probably cost $400-$500.

I wish you the best of luck. Van Horn really has nothing to offer. It's just a few run-down businesses. Is there not another bus headed to El Passo? I doubt there are many,. but I would hope they have another one available by late night or tomorrow.

Drive there at 40 mph? But, I like the Amazon idea. Let them do the delivery for you!!

Is there ANY store in town that will allow you to use there address and have autozone overnight it to you?

VERY scary! Fortunately two road workers brought me to El Paso to pick up the inverter pump and I’m catching the Greyhound back to Van Horn now to fix it, wish me luck!
I tried Uber, no one would come. I tried the local uhaul and they only had trailers.

I have the pink fluid, I need jack stands. Can I change the inverter pump without going under the car? The Van Horn napa hopefully has some, I’ll find out tomorrow.
That part doesnt fit my 2011 Prius, according to amazon. Yes I tried amazon.

Van Horn has NOTHING! I was able to get a ride to El Paso from a road worker, super nice guys. Im at greyhound going back to Van Horn now to change the part tonight.

I dont want to drive and fry the inverter or get stranded in truly nowhere.

I tried, the Napa said they could get it maybe in 3-4 more days. I can’t wait that long man.

I wish it were a joke

You’re probably right, and I figured as much too...but thats not a risk I can take being stranded like I am. If I was home jn my comfy garage I’d chance amazon but as I am I need to be precise.

For future reference: many hotels accept FedEx and UPS deliveries on behalf of their guests, and some will even do this for guests who haven’t yet arrived. You just give the recipient’s address as your name, “Guest c/o Hampton Inn” (or whatever), and the hotel’s street address.

I would venture that there are probably hundreds of Gen 2 and Gen 3 Prii, running around America and the world, with inoperable inverter cooling water pumps. Anyone who does light driving/local driving, etc is likely to never notice the pump has failed until they get on the highway and try to run at standard highway speed. I've driven a Gen 2 with a failed pump many miles by staying under 45 mph. If it gets hot, the car will protect itself with an overtemperature warning light to let you know you need to pull over and let it cool. Not advocating this as a 'solve all' solution, but if my other option was being stranded somewhere for 4 days, well, I'd be rolling on at about 30-40 mph or whatever it took.

@BrianStranded appreciate you’re busy and stressed, but how many miles on it?

The standard procedure in pretty involved with disconnecting and removing the converter. from the top under the hood.

Much simpler, however is the technique in this video. You must, however, have access from under the car after removing the undercover.

Most places, that speed would necessitate staying off the Interstate Highways and taking lesser roads.

But I've been given the impression that TX is among the places most hostile to slow drivers. Are there any practical routes for this?

A "Feeder" comes to mind, but this is likely a TX urban thing.

You could go US54 and US62 but that is more miles. I would call a tow truck and have them take us to El Paso. Guarantee they have tow trucks and most of us get free or discounted tows through our insurance. But he's probably back with the part and is diying.

Much of the Interstate Highway system is approximately paralleled by frontage roads, meant for both local access and for traffic that isn't interstate-legal.

But not everywhere. E.g. I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass in my state has numerous gaps in the frontage routes, so alternates involve taking very major detours quite far away. My quick view of OP's route to El Paso seemed to run into similar gaps, but I don't know that area at all.

Quite likely the same for Jim, though given his breadth of knowledge I wouldn't put it past him either.
