If the vehicle caught fire "right after the driver filled up the four gas containers", I am not sure how permeation through the walls of plastic containers will be anywhere near fast enough to explain it.

"The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office will determine the official cause of the fire." Might be best to wait and find out.

That said, once a fire has started (for whatever reason), I don't imagine the plastic containers hold out against it for very long.

He did "something," stupid? My guess would be open flame from smoking?? A few months ago I saw another SIlver Prius with several 5 gallon fuel cans?

I have no idea if they were or empty? But it is something you don't see everyday?? And nothing happened. Most likely the Hummer guy did something?

LOL. that's a self correction situation. How stupid do you have to be to realize, that laying something with a screw on cap on it's side? Is not really the best of idea's?

OMG and yeah thanks for posting. I have heard about the plastic bag thing? But I mean common that has to be "Fake News?"

But apparently not? I guess actual gas cans don't have stickers telling idiot's not to lay the can's on their side? And the plastic bag's? That is just a new realm of insanity? But I will say that if the plastic bag's don't instantly dissolve on contact with Gasoline, that is impressive! :)

The metal cans just transfer the heat of a fire faster to the gasoline.

They use the same plastic as the cans.

Yes but, in all those years, how many times have you laid the cans on it's side?

I would guess not once. And the gasoline in a "Plastic Bad Thing? OMG,are you freaking kidding me?

The only ones that will not leak when laid on the side are the original German designed jerry cans that have been made continuously since before WWII.

The best equivalent available in the US approved by the DOT and the UN for interstate and world gasoline transport are these.

I recently opened a 5 gallons of no ethanol gas stored in this metal gas can since September 18, 2011 with Stabil.

    5 Gallon Jerry Gas Can

The gas is in perfect condition with no gelling or clouding..

Apprenty so, But it is still something only an idiot would do? I doubt someone stupid enough to transport five gallons of gas in a plastic bag would be smart enough to get the fuel into a car? But I don't know?

The story isn't quite clear, but it sound like he was still at the gas station when it went up in flames? Is it possible he was filing the cans while they sat in the vehicle? I know there are warnings not to do this as static charge can cause ignition. Perhaps that may be what happened here?

    https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/98-111/pdfs/98-111.pdf?id=10.26616/NIOSHPUB98111#:~:text=Fire%20Hazard%3A%20Filling%20gas%20can,with%20can%20inlet%20when%20filling.

That aside, I don't really get people who buy all these cans of gasoline and transport it in their vehicle. Is it really necessary? Seems like an unnecessary risk, are they really that afraid of gas running out, or saving a couple dollars when gas prices are down? It really isn't worth the safety risk, IMO, imagine what could happen if someone rear-ends you with this cargo? But then again - at risk of being stereotypical - Hummer drivers don't tend to be the most intellectual demographic...:ROFLMAO:

Just buy a PHEV and use less gas instead. ;)

I'm wondering if the people investigating this fire found anyone in the drivers seat after the fire.

switched to metal containers years ago because of this very thing. No where does this article say these containers were being used for the very first time. Once plastic containers are used, the off-gassing will continue on and on - for days, weeks, and months. Concentrations high enough to explode? To be determined.
