I was prius camping over the holiday. I had been leaving the vehicle on for most of the weekend. My 2012 pruis has 117642 miles. Drove from Ohio to Chicago with no problems and it hasn't smoked since. It does use oil. I have to add oil at every fill up. Usually between a half quart or half of a half depending on how much highway miles I'm driving. Any ideas...It had been raining and it was in the 50s to early 60s temp outside. It hasn't lost coolant and it didn't smell like coolant. Really didn't have an odor.

I would watch the coolant and hope you don't get any cold start shakes.

    half a quart per 400 miles =
a lot of oil burning between changes

yes I would expect to see it smoke occasionally. you usually don't see it because.... well... it's heading the opposite direction of where you're looking, and it's burning all the time

    how's your compression ?

have you tried any of the snake oil products that claim to unstick rings ?

might not be a bad idea to soak each cylinder with atf+acetone over night and then change the oil a couple of time to flush the magic stuff out.

I'm assuming your rings are just stuck and not weak tension

Straight ATF or Marvel Mystery Oil might be a better choice since you don't have to worry much about "flushing" it out afterwards.
Applied when the engine is hot.....or at least warm.

If I may jump in, thorough cleaning of everything between the connection of Exhaust Gas Recirculation system at the the exhaust manifold and the engine intake ports.

Generally speaking smoke, if it's blue is oil burning and smoke if it's white is coolant. It's pretty much that simple. I'd say you have a "failing head gasket." It looks like a micro leak now, but it's not going to heal itself.

I'll second a compression test being done. More than likely one cylinder is down on compression or easier still just pull the spark plugs, the cylinder that is burning coolant will be cleaner then the others.

If you address it early, it's just a Head Gasket R&R, if you wait to late you'll need to source a motor.

Oh great, soon there’ll be a new thread:
‘Hi guys, I’m the excited new owner of a 2012 Prius with 117,643 miles, and i've heard that these cars can go a half million miles.

i'm so glad i found this community, and I’m wondering if anyone knows what the white smoke coming out of the exhaust is from...'

    More like:

‘Hi guys, I am looking at a 2012 Prius with 117k miles and I have heard that these cars can go a half million miles. The car runs great and and is a steal in today's market. Any advice?'

    and he will get:

My 2010 with 110k is wonderful, does not use oil and I have never had a problem. But clean your egr system.
