Low battery charge full with one brake pump?

    A couple times now my Prius had a very low battery and then I just hit the brake one time and all the sudden it was fully charged. What is happening? Instant charging? Is it bad or is it supposed to happen. Im a new Prius owner.

    Really depends on what you mean by "very low battery" and "brake one time." I can regen my HV battery completely by braking one time on a long steep hill.

    This is a plug-in model ?
    Was it plugged in right prior to noticing that ??

    My guess is the computer system is just taking some time to update the display.

    idk if it is bad, but it's not right. could be a wiring or ecu problem. how many miles on her?

    It is a plug in and no it wasnt plugged in. There's 236k miles. One of the times I went around the neighborhood pressing brake to see if it would charge and it didnt seem to then when I was parking it was full. The other time I went over an overpass and was concerned the battery was so low and both times it was a little tap that showed full charge.

    My second guess is that this is an early warning sign that something with the HV battery needs attention.
    Could be the battery itself or connections corroding.
    Also could be a 12 V battery getting weak.......but I think that's a long shot.

    i don't think so sam, sounds like a bad connection or something.

    the brake is not charging the battery, just changing the charge icon.

    Are you just seeing the transition between the EV and HV mode battery display?

    If the battery level indication is solid (not segmented) and it's showing a range estimate directly below, then the battery state of charge is higher than if it's showing "full" but segmented. You are only ever likely to see the battery really full (left-most in the diagram, with range estimate of 10-12 miles or so) if you plug it in to charge. The segmented HV mode display is replicating the battery capacity of a standard non-plugin Prius (a smaller portion of the full capacity).

    I suspect "hitting" or "pumping" the brake pedal will be mostly using the friction brakes and you won't get much/any regeneration from that (you won't get much from low speed driving anyway), so it's probably going down from EV to HV mode battery status as more power is being consumed than recovered. Gentle braking over a long distance is what will get you significant regeneration.

    Honestly not yet. How bad is that? I kind of don't get it why to charge for so long when driving it brings the battery up also. Not saying im not going to. Im not allowed yet to charge at home.

    Yes. Possibly. If they look the same mostly then this is the best possibility.

    Not being able to charge at home is sad, not bad. Driving a PiP doesn't typically give you any EV miles. You're just driving a regular hybrid but lugging around a bunch of battery weight that you're not using. Depending on the length of your commute, plugging in will give you anywhere from a substantial to an astounding reduction in gas usage.

    Yes, this is your issue. I'm 99.999999% sure. It's in the manual. Actually, not an issue with the car, just an issue with understanding what the car is telling you.

    not bad at all, always a choice. but the brake does not bring the battery up like wall charging, so study quantum's graphic and read the manual for an understanding of how your car operates, then come here with questions

    Ok so I went to the power company and plugged in. It is so much different. I went in with it almost at full charge and was surprised when it still took the two hours. But then after I was able to really drive in EV mode consistently instead of interment. Thats great! I did end up using the power to sit parked with climate control while waiting for the tint shop to open but I definitely see the difference now.

    That's because it wasn't almost full. Go back to Quantum's picture in post #9. What you were calling almost full was an icon with a segmented battery that looks like the battery indicator in a regular Gen 3 Prius. The three on the right in his picture from your owners manual show those segments. That means you don't have any EV range available and your PiP is acting like a regular Prius. Once you plug it in and charge it up, you have a solid battery indicator which means you now have EV range available. Those are the three on the left in the picture. Ya really gotta read that manual. You'll be SO much happier with your car when you understand it.
