Hello, I figured this would’ve been a sticky thread, but I didn’t see one… Simple question: I need to change the 12 V battery in a GEN two. Has a genuine Toyota in the box ready to go, just wondered if there is anything I need to know going into this that might be helpful

Fully CHARGE your new battery before installing it.

Sure…..use the search forums link up top and search

    12 volt battery

there’s hundreds of posts there about the deep deep mystery’s of the 12 volt battery.

Minimum remove the 2 black cables from the top battery assy. Pry off the red cover and you will see a big black wire and thin black wire they plug into the battery mount assy both terminate in white plugs use screwdriver press there release lever they come right out now the12 volt is removed from the cars buss. Remove battery terminal negative first.

Remove battery from hole. Get flashlight look in hole for standing water or very bad corrosion. Address the corrosion. Rubber plug in bottom of that hole r3move it to drain any water. Drill a hole through it for water venting and reinstall the plug.

tape over the positive post of the new battery before install so no accidental shorts because battery go boom.

install negative cable lastly then at the end plug in the 2 black wires.

take iPhone pictures of everything before hand.

before starting the car measure the 12 volts at the front jump point.
Should be approx .5 volts lower than at the battery.

first time you start the car all check engines will light. That’s normal. Shut the car off and start it again should be ok.

good luck. It’s a real pain to do this battery in very bad place.

Most batteries I've bought have come with a little plastic cap that snugly fits over the positive post (or even one over each post).

As long as that's there, I'd probably stick with that rather than tape; with tape I'd be pretty careful to clean all the goop off the post before making the electrical connections, might be more trouble than I'd like.

Replacing a 12v doesn't require much explanation. Watch a youtube video... Sticky posts / Featured Posts are primarily designated that if they can potentially drive lots of web traffic to the website and is not a decision that's made by the person posting but by admins. Changing a 12v is not that.

Thanks for all the replies everybody!

I will check his voltage and if necessary charge it before putting in. I’m sure I can handle the job, but just wanted pointers, as I respect the Prius for its complexity.

As for whether or not this should’ve been posted, I have built cars from the ground up using parts I made And parts I gather… I don’t find mechanical things to be particularly challenging, but again this is a Prius, not a 1950 Chevy. I figured it was safer to ask rather than learn the hard way if there was something “special” I needed to know

Just remember that a modern AGM battery should read 12.8 or 12.9 if fully charged.
And a reading around 12.0 indicates that it is only HALF charged.
