Is this covered by warrenty?

I doubt it would be covered under warranty unfortunately. It is really disappointing. I’d be interested to know what others suggest doing to avoid this since at work I have no choice but to park outside.

toyota will sometimes respond favorably to a request for goodwill warranty when the warranty ended recently

 

By all means bring it to the dealer, document their response, and take pics.

It never hurts to be prepared. For example, Honda had a clear coat problem several years back, resulting in surface areas degrading prematurely. We usually pass our cars on to the kids or grand kids and our grand daughter's car was one of the affected vehicles. After some wrangling, Honda had the car (now 8 years old) prepped and painted by one of their certified repair shops.... and this was negotiated miles away from us (she was in Texas, we are in CT).

Those plastic panels sometimes do this on a variety of models, (many different models have them). While they are not cheap parts, they just snap off and snap on so are easy to replace.

Just curious, is there by chance an automatic car wash in this car's history?

 

Toyota has always been cool to me whenever I have reached out to their customer service. I agree with others it wouldn’t hurt to call.

Seems to me like this problem has already been extensively documented with Toyota and that they are likely to take care of the problem.
If not under warranty or a service bulletin, then under "good will".
By all means, call the warranty help number if the dealer is saying you will have to pay for the fix.

 

Two things: First, maybe it is the reflection in your picture, but that panel doesn't look like the one on my Prius. Mine is a solid piano black; yours is a dull blue. Is the other side the same? Second, sam spade says this is extensively documented. This is the first the first I have heard of it. Do any other PP owners on this forum have this problem?

 

I don't know how "extensive" the problem is, but certainly, this is not the first case I have read about it.

I don't know it. A trip to your dealer's parts desk will give you the part number, then search for it on eBay, Amazon, etc.

But as @rdgrimes pointed out, you might want to talk to the dealer parts desk to be sure the part number is compatible with your year model. there are a few parts numbers for the same parts.

 

Replacing the panel should be very easy. It should just pull off and a new one will snap-in, You could also just wrap or paint the panel. Which may be cheaper than buying a new panel and look better. I am actually thinking of pre-emptively wrapping most of those plastic garnishes on my new 2021. But before doing all that, since you are in CA, you should have looked into trading in your PP for a new one. It might be cheaper to buy a new PP than fix an old one. That was the case for me in New England.

 

The coverage for "corrosion perforation" is 60k unlimited miles. I suppose you could argue for coverage under corrosion. But at some point you give up and D.I.Y. Buy the part on eBay or Amazon.
I see the same thing on my '18 Prime.
