I just washed my car today. It's a 2017 prius prime which been put to use since June 2nd 2018. So it's 3 yrs and 1 month now. I just noticed that the coating just start to peel off.
Is this a quality issue? Does toyota fix it for free?
It's kind of ridiculous. I understand LA has been hot for last few yrs, but just 3 yrs man.

I doubt it would be covered under warranty unfortunately. It is really disappointing. I’d be interested to know what others suggest doing to avoid this since at work I have no choice but to park outside.

I chat online with a dealership nearby. They said they will forward my information to their team. Probably will get back with a repair quote...
I just read their warrenty on Toyota.com.
They cover evrything for 3 yrs. And I am 10 days past that.
Just like my printer. warrenty is 2 yrs. It was perfect within that 2 yrs. And as soon as it hits the date, it start to act up.

By all means bring it to the dealer, document their response, and take pics.

It never hurts to be prepared. For example, Honda had a clear coat problem several years back, resulting in surface areas degrading prematurely. We usually pass our cars on to the kids or grand kids and our grand daughter's car was one of the affected vehicles. After some wrangling, Honda had the car (now 8 years old) prepped and painted by one of their certified repair shops.... and this was negotiated miles away from us (she was in Texas, we are in CT).

You'll never know if you don't try!

Those plastic panels sometimes do this on a variety of models, (many different models have them). While they are not cheap parts, they just snap off and snap on so are easy to replace.

Just curious, is there by chance an automatic car wash in this car's history?

Toyota has always been cool to me whenever I have reached out to their customer service. I agree with others it wouldn’t hurt to call.

Thank you for your information rdgrimes.
Do you know the part number or name of the part what I am looking for?
Just in case if I need to repair them myself, I can order the parts and try to do it myself.
Some kids got high and smashed my door glass on 4th of July. I have to order the parts myself to save about 30% but still, they charged me 215 for just repalcing the glass.

Seems to me like this problem has already been extensively documented with Toyota and that they are likely to take care of the problem.
If not under warranty or a service bulletin, then under "good will".
By all means, call the warranty help number if the dealer is saying you will have to pay for the fix.

Two things: First, maybe it is the reflection in your picture, but that panel doesn't look like the one on my Prius. Mine is a solid piano black; yours is a dull blue. Is the other side the same? Second, sam spade says this is extensively documented. This is the first the first I have heard of it. Do any other PP owners on this forum have this problem?

I don't know it. A trip to your dealer's parts desk will give you the part number, then search for it on eBay, Amazon, etc.

I think this is the part you need.

But as @rdgrimes pointed out, you might want to talk to the dealer parts desk to be sure the part number is compatible with your year model. there are a few parts numbers for the same parts.

Yeah, I called dealership and Toyota. Both said I am out of warrenty, I have to pay for the repair. Ridculous. I even had the honor to speak to a SENIOR Colleague. Only thing he does is to "document" my case and if there is any open warrenty for this problem in the future, I could save my receipt and ask for possible reimbursement. Of course, they don't guarantee anything.
And he said that since there are many cases documented online that I searched, I should just just drive my car to a dealership and inpsect the problem on site, and it should be fixed. I already told him that I already did that, and I was turned down due to a few days passed 3 yr warrenty.
I also mentioned that I understand the concept of warrenty, but it does not means that the parts should just fail immediately after the warrenty.
Does it means the car should be falling apart after 5 years? LOL

Replacing the panel should be very easy. It should just pull off and a new one will snap-in, You could also just wrap or paint the panel. Which may be cheaper than buying a new panel and look better. I am actually thinking of pre-emptively wrapping most of those plastic garnishes on my new 2021. But before doing all that, since you are in CA, you should have looked into trading in your PP for a new one. It might be cheaper to buy a new PP than fix an old one. That was the case for me in New England.

So just a quick update. I have emailed Toyota then went to a dealership. Both said since it's out of warrenty, they can't do anything.

Dealership first tried to add a 155 diagnose fee to "check into what is going on" like they can't tell the clear coat is peeling. I said to him that the parts is only 100 dollars, and what exactly do you need to diagnose? Then he added a repair order on my maintenece list and quoted me for 215 for replacing it for free(so they know what's going on LOL).

I am not saying this particular service rep represents the dealership, but it's a horrible experience.

BTW, the part number for 2017 prius prime is Door Applique (Right) - Toyota (62505-47011), just in case if anyone needs the name or the part number in the future.

I guess the only thing I can do right now is to file a complaint on BBB, not like it matters, but parts should not fail immediately out of warrenty with minimal use.

The coverage for "corrosion perforation" is 60k unlimited miles. I suppose you could argue for coverage under corrosion. But at some point you give up and D.I.Y. Buy the part on eBay or Amazon.
I see the same thing on my '18 Prime.

I just checked the warrenty. Yeah, it basically covers nothing. LOL. It excludes pretty much everything.
