I've heard of Prime owners who never charge their traction battery and others who do a daily 5.5hr 120v recharge. How often to you charge your traction battery? I charge mine once a week just to use it, and I enjoy the ride. I have a feeling the plug in capability is going to come in very handy in the not so distant future. After 1 year I'm still getting over 33 miles on a charge.

It will be interesting to see how these Lithium Ion Batteries compare to Nickel Hydride over time.

We have a PP for our winter home in AZ. We plug it in after everytime we drive it. The vast majority of our driving down there, the vast majority of our driving is on the traction battery. Just before we left to come home, I put 5.5 gallons of gas in it, the only time we put any in for close to 6 months, with app 1500 miles put on during that time. More than happy with that!!

With my 2017 PP, I was doing nightly charge almost every day for my daily commute and weekend drives. But things changed for my 2020 PP. With pandemic work from home and hesitancy to go out. I only charged the car once a week not even fully. I recently got a new 2021 PP. So far 3 full charges in 1 week. When I go back to daily commuting later this summer, I plan to go back to daily charging. One good thing is that our workplace recently installed charge stations for employees. I may be doing two charges/day soon.

I did not drive enough on 2020 PP to get a good average EV range from a full charge, but with my new 2021 PP, I think it is getting a better EV range than I used to be able to get on my 2017 PP. So far, 3 full charge EV modes 100%-0%, I have been getting an average of 32.4miles/full charge with AC.

I’ve averaged 3-5 days charging per week since I got mine in late April but it’ll become daily starting in mid-August when I go back to work. Gonna need every bit of efficiency from then to Christmas as I’ll have a 5x200 mile/320km round trip daily commute for 15 weeks.

I have 73k on my 2020, and 30% of those are electric miles. Do the math. Lol.

seeing that toyota has been using lithium for over 10 years with great success, i'd say nimh comes in a distant second

I've had my 2021 for 2 or 3 weeks now. Only charged it once. Sorta need to add an outlet for convenience....or move my RV to someone else since it's plugged in and hogging that side of my driveway

I charge mine every night, average driving 30miles a day. I got the car a little over a month with 1500miles at 90% EV

I charge mine after every trip. After learning about the buffer “on top” I have no concerns. Maybe 5 times a week? I use the 8 amp option.

Unless I forget, I charge nightly. I work in town and can drive all day (usually) in EV mode during the work week.

Mine gets a near full charge three to four times per week. The battery is usually down to ~10-15% when I start and in the high 90’s% after six hours before I leave for work. I set the charging current to 8 amp mode.

Charged after every trip. I see no reason to not charge. I know, there are some special circumstances such as long term storage where the battery wants less than a full charge, but for use 6 to 7 days a week it's charged.

I've got a 2015 Prius with a nickel hydride battery and 145k miles and it performs like it did when I bought it new. I won't complain if my 2020 Lithium-Ion matches it.

I fully charge up our 2019 Prime Plus twice a day 5 days a week;).

This has been the routine for two years and range reported by the GOM is still around 32-34 miles:).

    Works well for us(y).

Edit to add: over 42k miles on our 2019 and lifetime EV percentage of about 67%. Lifetime mpg is 135.7.

I charge it once a day at night. I have 40.8K miles now. And about 65% of my miles is EV. I do travel out of the city: that's when I pump gas.

Maybe Mrs Bear and I are naive, but we always plug our Prime into an L2 charger when it's parked in our garage. In fact, if we don't plug it in, we get an Toyota Entune message saying: "Charge Notification - Plug-in Reminder Notification: Our systems indicate that your Bear-Mobile is near your primary or secondary charging location and was not plugged into a power source."

Those messages are also logged to my email archive and, in the four years we've owned our 2017 Prime, we've received about 2100 charge completion notifications. That's about 44 messages per month.

Generally, our driving pattern is local miles within the metro area. It may be as little as 2 miles round trip to the local supermarket or 25 miles round trip to classes at a suburban university campus. June was the first time since last Thanksgiving that we used any gasoline and that was for two trips of about 250 miles round trip each.

We have not noticed any particular change in battery performance. The instrumentation still predicts about 33 miles of EV range during the summer and about 26 miles of EV range in the winter.

I wish the car had a longer EV range, but we're not obsessing about charging. We just plug it in whenever we can conveniently do so.

This is wonderful. I would just note that if you’re using very little gasoline the owners manual does state to use up gas before it gets to 12 months. The gasoline can breakdown in your tank which isn’t good for the vehicle
