I have a 2013 FIVE with the Advanced Technology Package (Lane Keep Assist, Pre-Collision System, etc.), and I am thinking of having my entire windshield tinted at 50% (legal in my state). I know the ATP depends on a camera in the back of the rear-view mirror and several other sensors. The Toyota precautions include standard language that very dirty or tinted windshields could interfere with those functions. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this, either getting the eyebrow/top several inches tinted, or the entire windshield, and its effect on these sensors?

Camera behind the rearview mirror? I have a Plug-in with Advanced package with HUD. It would've been nice to have the lane keep assist, but my windshield is pretty dark and has had no issues. I've had the only problem when I moved the PCS radar from behind the front emblem to the lower grill, but I figured out how to make it all work. That said, I've had no issues having a dark tint but wondering what camera do you have because I have a reverse cam mirror, and still all golden. Thanks!

I don't want to impose on your privacy, but what state lets you tint the windshield? Let alone 50%?

If you like driving in the dark, you're gonna be way more in the dark with this incredibly unsafe window tint plan... You're literally saying that you want 50% less visibility of what you can see when you're driving.

And how do you think that's going to work out for you in winter when you get caught in thick fog or snow or heavy rain at night?

Please make sure to return to this post and let us know once you crash your car into something because you didn't see it... Sure hope it isn't an innocent person that you hit!

And if anyone wants to bet me $5 that this is what's going to happen to you before 2025, I always make good on my bets!

You'll get alot more medical exemptions once you total your car by crashing into something you couldn't see quickly enough on a stormy dark winter night, that's for sure.

The camera cutout in the "eyebrow" is not so big. Maybe your tint guy would give you a piece to test with?

PCS would be unaffected, but LKA definitely uses the camera. IPA I'm not sure about.

reaching there, I've always had my front windows tinted, never crashed. although I live in Southern California, we don't have much stormy dark weather over here, just lots of sunshine and fires.

now back to the OP's question.

What model Prius has a camera behind the rearview mirror? Where is it placed and what is it for? I've only seen a sensor on parts.toyota.com like the one I have on my car.

you can get medical exemptions from your Dr that will get around the tint bans that most States have. originally it was "for officer safety" because one or more were shot through dark tinted windows.

twenty five years ago my 4x4 had 5% "limo" tint all the way around, except for 50% on the windshield. yes, it was dumb. during that time, it was wheeled in mud, rain, snow, and ice, without collisions. someone's it was sideways crawling through thick stinky mud. sometimes it was towing stranded motorists out of ice/snow ditches. in 4 years I did not back into or collide with anything as a result of the window tint.

that was with horrible quality 5% dyed tint. today's ceramic tint is incredibly improved vs that old dyed garbage from back then. you could have 90% "tint" today that rejects all the infrared heat, but still has very good visibility.... but for cool points people like it darker. personally I prefer about 90% so that my old eyes can see everything around me, but u know others prefer to roll down a window (like I did back then) in crowded situations. if they choose to do so, I'm fine with it.
