Hey Toyota, I've spent 9 hours today cleaning my intake manifold and EGR cooler and passages on my 2011 Gen 3 Prius. (I know, I know, everyone can do it faster.) This was my second time (252,000 miles). The first time was at 180,000 miles and at that time I installed an oil catch can. Had I not been advised to do this by the wonderful people on this forum, I'm sure I would have been replacing a blown head gasket or a complete engine by now and spending a lot of money. Just think of all the owners of Gen 3's that have been doing this enjoyable task and the amount of time and effort expended. Now, think of the less mechanically inclined that have spent a lot of money to have this task accomplished. However, more than likely, MOST OWNERS have NEVER heard of this and will be in financial trouble when the next thing that happens is the dealership informs them they need a new engine. "Surprise, surprise, surprise!" says Gomer the service writer.
So Toyota, we need the individuals responsible for this gross engineering mistake to sacrifice themselves. (Joke!).

    Shame on Toyota!

I think you should do it a third time, and perhaps install a second OCC.

That way, if you don't have a head gasket failure, you'll have proved that two OCCs and three EGR cleanings are necessary to prevent head gasket failure.

That would then bolster your position in (Joke!)-ing about ritual suicide for members of the design team.

IIRC 4th gen white paper, or sales brochure, touted “redesigned EGR”, something to that effect. Pretty esoteric stuff for sales literature.

I'm still scratching my head on that one.

When I drove a Subaru, the guys on the Subaru forums were all suggesting the installation of oil catch cans as the cure to detonation problems.

We bought a Mazda the other week. I happened to sign up on a forum. Want to guess which accessory is often mentioned on the forum as a necessary step to successful Mazda ownership?

And yet there are millions and MILLIONS of those cars......and others......still on the road today without any head gasket problems AND without an "oil catch can".
Must be some kind of a miracle.

I remain TOTALLY unconvinced that the EGR or PCV has anything to do with "blown" head gaskets.

I'm somewhere in the middle; I've heard the arguments from the folks who are convinced of a connection.

One of the zany points is that there are so many different mechanisms being advanced for why and how it (supposedly) happens, and the proponents do a lot of tossing them around interchangeably and not a lot of trying to distinguish between them.

Some of the ideas sound plausible enough to be worth collecting enough data to try to evaluate, and I'm doing what I can to facilitate that. We also have true believers who show a more "don't need a weatherman to see the wind blow" approach to what establishing causality and mechanism really entails.

So there's room here for a lively diversity of opinion, which there has been all along. But it's still a pretty enormous escalation of that to take the supposed certainty of the true believers here and run with it all the way to a "(Joke!)" about ritual suicide addressed to the car's design team, for whom culturally that might not be as much of a (Joke!).

People are "convinced" of all kinds of things these days, much of which is total crap.

This COVID thing has just hammered home a point to me that just recently became crystal clear:
There is a MUCH larger percentage of the human population that qualifies as clinically stupid than I previously thought.
AND......that segment of the population is multiplying faster than the rest too.

Mazda direct injection tends to carbon/tar clog intakes and valves. Direct AND port injectors are better in that regard.

It being MY car, as long as they’re not detrimental, I’m going to address all the usual suspects.

Isn't there a redesigned Gen 3 EGR valve? Could have sworn I flashed the new ECU software (but didn't replace the EGR valve). Issue was it sticking and causing NVH/CEL after cold soak....

    EDIT-

    T-SB-0027-16
EGR Valve Kit- 04004-58137 (Valve & 3 gaskets)
    EGR Cooler Gasket #1- 25685-37010
    Authorized Mod Label- 00451-00001-LBL

    moto g(7) power ?

Tankuong, I have a couple of questions. Did you also clean the intake manifold and accomplish a thorough cleaning of the EGR ports on the intake manifold? Also, what speed do you usually drive on the highway? Thank you.

Congrats on making it past 250K miles -- that's what we expect from a well-maintained Toyota. (My first was a Corona -- and that's not a typo.) I hope Toyota has done a post-mortem on the Gen3 situation (but not on their engineers).

Good points ChapmanF. It is the internet. Maybe I was a little over the top. Maybe there's a better way for Toyota to provide atonemont. Maybe like a real recall for original owners? What? Too many Gen 3's? Or, maybe reparations to those original owners who have kept the faith but personally suffered financial loss. Or, at least, partial compensation for financial loss.
Nope. Toyota just keeps quiet. Toyota believes it's just a few anomalies and the rest are hallucinating. When the owner is aware of the problem they can't afford the dealers fix/efforts. Invariably they go to an independent shop. Toyota repairs few of these problems due to the expense at the dealer. What, me worry?

In their Warranty Enhancement Program, Toyota says "while the majoirity of vehicles will not experience this condition..."

Where "this condition" is plainly readable in the same document, and is "a rough idle and/or tapping noise from the HV transaxle at cold start due to a sticking EGR valve".

Sometimes I think we'd be able to move beyond basing arguments on out-of-context quotes.

Ah, the Corona. Back in the days when (almost) everything was rear wheel drive.
